By lavish I mean do you spend excessively?

At times I say my wife and I do, but we are fairly conservative when it comes to our lifestyle...

  • We have a home with a comparatively small mortgage to most, 1900 sq ft. cape
  • We both drive new(er) cars (Dodge Dakota and Saab 9-3)
  • I enjoy electronics: Surround Sound, HDTV's, Gaming, etc.
  • We probably spend close to 500-600/mo. on entertainment / random items (eating out, things for the house, going to the bar)
  • I save close to 12% of my take home pay into 401(k) and another 5% into savings accounts. She saves about 9% into her 401(k). We have close to 2500/mo after bills left over that normally goes into savings on top of what already goes in there.
  • We don't normally drink top shelf liquor but spend plenty on beer (probably 150/mo or so, but we have friends and family over all the time)
  • She has a clothing / shoe habit, I have a project (house) habit.
  • We shop at Old Navy and Gap and I don't wear a Rolex, but my watch did cost about 700 bucks new...
Based on this, am I living a lavish lifestyle? I feel as though we don't live lavishly, but more comfortably. Its a blend between living the life now and later, I feel as though I am at a comfortable spot at this level to retire @ 55 and actually enjoy life and do what I want to do at that point...

What about you? Is it worth it?

like the old addage goes "it's not how much you make but how much you spend" so it should hold true also for "how much you save"
nothing lavish here 650 a month mortgage 2 cars paid for no expensive electronics clothes from Ross tj max or salvation army I do have my son by myself (expensive my one luxuary) coulda let the ex have him child support is cheaper, but she's fucked up (bi-polar ocd)

steve, i wouldnt say you're living a "lavish" life at all... definitely more "comfortable"
you make decent money
your purchases while based on what you like/want, also take into account what you actually need... i dont see you spending foolishly on all sorts of worthless toys and frivolous shit
you like to have a few upper dollar items, you appreciate and enjoy quality, and thats fine, because you can afford them...
you are doing well on saving and prepping for the future
but you're still remembering to enjoy life as you go forward (thats VERY important)

You're from CT. You live a lavish lifestyle in comparison to the rest of the US. For living in Connecticut, you're a fuckin slob.

if you were someone in your age / pay range you would have an escalade right now, golf clubs that never get used and Raymour and Flanigan / Levitz furniture throughout your house. You would be hiring someone to do eveything around your house.

You're fine for CT. You're a celebrity for the rest of the country.

Myself: I'm a blue collar yuppie. I'm tighter than a frog's ass, yet I'm financing a 1976 Chevy Vega and riding a Vespa back and forth to work at Yale. I have $10 army navy jeans but a $500 motorcycle leather. All of my meds in the cabinet are generic but I have $1500 worth of tires and rims on my car. It's that balance... you know.. the one that I don't have.

I'm sorta of spender Myself...

This years purchases alone,

TomTom 510 GPS--$399
Sirirus Stiletto --$250
Movado Watch $1000
2002 Mercedes c240 $21k
TSW Rims and tires $1500
Bic Acoustic Speakers and Onkyo Receiver $1200
Xbox 360 games accessroies etc...$600
Pergo Floors for the Condo $750

Thats all i can think of for now

I do have several savings some joint with my fiance some independant, 6% to my 401k out of my check, 105 to my stocks, 200 to joint savings, and another 100 for regular savings

Are you trying to ask me if I do Scarface-esque lines of blow on my table on a nightly basis?

Maybe...

lavish...hmm. i would say you're living well, and wisely, meeester vila.

as for me...
  • $900/mo rent gets my single ass a spacious 2br/1ba upstairs floor of an old victorian house (utilities included) up on a bluff in scenic mississippi river region of MN
  • 18yr old car
  • 1 parrot, 1 dog, 1 9mm p228
  • $5k or less debt in various formats.
  • no savings, half a tank of gas, and enough food in the fridge for a week, and another week or two in the pantry.
  • a serious itch to travel (that i scratch pretty regularly).

O yeha my Zune player too $289

you live lavishly if you have the week-ends off and can still get by....

my lavishishness is wheels and tires...one day I will find a use for them, but they sit in the shed I made collecting dust.

I make $28+ an hour, work 7 days a week...as long as my body can hold out or stay awake. In 3-4 years I've got my 401K from zero to where it is now... $33,500.... my year to date income just hit $72.5K's for this year...and thats with 2 weeks off. But I spend crazy money for food and living expensces...I'd say about $5Ks a month goes toward bills and food. Any extra goes to the old used cars I drive, updates for the house. Home equity loan has put my house at a full balance for less than $200K's, and I still have $16K's to mess with on the kitchen...but the house will be completely done in a few weeks on the exterior...siding, roof, and windows. Working 7 days a week, and stressing out about safety for the pilots and the passengers on the aircraft I repair everynight...plus having a wife with MS...pushes me towards borderline alcoholic standards...but I keep it to just 4-6 Corona's a day, and pass out with plenty of time to sober up for the next day of work.

If I lowered my bills, and cut back on some habits...I wouldn't have to work 7 days a week... :(

or if my wife even had a job...or covered some of the bills...nah...she's helped out enough...and I pamper her too much. :)

i'm a snob, and i'll be the first to admit it.

i like it.

not only do i work, but i have 7 sources of passive income.

that's how you get wealthy... not rich :)

ive never thought of you as one :p but hell. you're a snob. fuck you! :)

i wouldn't say lavish i would say comfortable, i by no means am rich but i have most of the stuff i want for now, can pay my bills every month, and have enough left over to save some and still go out from time to time.

Snob or smartass lol?

I live in a tiny ass apartment in the middle of manhattan.

I save $400 a month

I blow 1k on entertainment and cloths monthly.

I get no sleep.

IDK if that qualifies as lavish or not, but it sure is fun.

"lavish" is a relative term. Everybody needs to remember that you're on a Honda forum. I'd venture to say that no active posters on here live a "lavish lifestyle" even by middle-class America's standards. Only person that I can think of that I've ever seen on here that I think had a lavish lifestyle would be Ryan (RSX Ryan, S2K Ryan, Hot-ass-wife-having Ryan)... can't remember what his username was.

If thats lavish what do i live?

I generally wear designer clothes (for work), just bought and S2000, I have a nice 2bed/2bath apt. An XBox 360, quite a few games, im about to buy a new tv...

I think your life style is more intelligent than mine, and if i could tune my brain in that way, i would.

i wish i could... i would be if i was single, but since i got married, the wife has pretty much drained me of all my extra money. thankfully she has an interview monday at a hospital here and will be able to help me with all the bills we are racking up
