I did my first solo flight today. Instructor took me up, we did a few touch and go's, then he bailed out on the runway and let me take it up by myself.

The first solo is a big deal in the pilot community, and I'm freakin' stoked. He chopped off the back of my shirt after I landed. I cut and pasted the following from a wiki describing the tradition:

In aviation lore, the traditional removal of a new pilot's shirt tail is a sign of the instructor's new confidence in his student. In the days of tandem trainers, the instructor would tug at the students shirt tail whenever he was getting himself into trouble. After the first solo, the new pilot is competent in the air does not need such a safety device.

So, my shirt tail goes up on the instructor's wall.. Along with all of his other student's.. Although mine is Bright frickin yellow with blue palm trees and slightly darker yellow hibiscus.. It sould stand out nicely..

(RIP one of my favorite shirts, lol)

Anyway, Thought I'd come on here and brag a bit!!

was there a song playing on your brain-radio while you were solo? i'm thinking like....flight of the valkyries...or uhm...TROGDOR!!!!! or you know....something cool?

/channeling strongbad tonight i guess..

Trogdor!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

nice dude!

i cant wait till next year. flying is the only thing im really looking forward to.

No cool theme songs.. I was busy trying not to crash and getting used to the different handling characteristics of a little tiny plane after it suddenly lost 175 pounds. Its amazing how much more squirley they are with just a little less weight in them. The climb rate went up 300 foot per minute, and the gusts really knocked me around..

It was a freakin blast, though. Next three hours are solo, then the instructor hops back in so I can finish my IFR (Insturment Flight Rules, Flying with only insturments and no reference to anything outside of the plane) I'm going back up friday!

AWESOME

Congrats.. man you moved up in that class quick. How many hours do you have ?

skeerily i just QA'd NWA's IFR/NAV training and walked away from the experience wishing i had one of these and a cuban cigar.

for the record if i ever get a windfall of cashola, i'll be buying that biyatch and asking you for lessons -- and there *will* be a theme song. oh yes, there will.

Mooneys are awesome.. A local doctor just purchased a mooney rocket this last tuesday.. Cost him his old mooney and $200k. I think it was a 1989 model! Those things are expensive! (but very fast and fun)

I went flying yesterday.. From Brownwood to San Marcos with my instructor, recieved my Solo Cross Country Endorsement, and did my first Cross-Country Solo flight back to Brownwood.

I could fly solo before, but had a 25 mile leash. The leash is now gone, and I can fly wherever the heck I please.

Just now rolled up on 20 hours. 20 more, and I'll have my private pilot's license! I'm half way there!

Just thought I'd stop in and brag a bit =D

I was screwing around on the way back and trying out different altitudes, etc.. and learned something interesting about myself:

I used to be afraid of heights, but I'm an adrenaline junkie, so I would climb up things or look off of things that scared me. Well, after a bit of that, heights didn't bother me anymore. And I haven't had any fear whatsoever while flying. On the way back from San Marcos, I climbed to 6500 ft, and that didn't bother me a bit, Hit 7500 and had this uneasy feeling. 8500 feet and I was feeling fear. Got the rush. And it was awesome. What I don't understand is, How can I be 6500 feet in the air with no feeling one way or another but be afraid at 8500 feet?

I'm wondering if it has something to do with atmospheric pressure or something.. My body reacting to the thinner air perhaps..

that's a strange thing...for me if i'm 10 feet off the ground i feel teetery/scared, but if i'm up crazy-high it is like my mind can't really fathom the pain of falling so it's like, screw it, we're not scared anymore. you've got it kinda the other way around...here's an interesting related read.

I know when I was on my garage and shed building and laying shingles...I was scared shitless until I put the roofer's board on the edge. After that I was walking all around the roof with ease. Then when I climbed on the house's roof to clean something...cold sweats... but the next time I had a rope tied to me I was fine and did a chiminy cover install.

But when I'm in a plane...funny thing is ....I have no fear of heights..

or when I'm on a mountain as a kid...(my dad was a mountain climbing instructor and involved heavily in the search and rescue) we go up cliff and eves with no problems...as long as I had a rope.

The safety net is the key to heights...not a real net...but a mental one.

And when you get to the point to where your doing dead engine landings...alway remember that the plane was originally a glider... ;)

lmao

as for the song, i guess Chariots of Fire

Good job man, I thought about continuing and getting mine, but too much $$$$
