It's only stupid if it doesn't work

Ok so my house has a wireless internet set-up. That's fine for my laptop but I just got a desktop because the laptop is acting weird lately. My question is could I run an ethernet cable from the laptop to the desktop to give it an internet connection?

you will have to bridge the network connections and use a crossover ethernet cable (NOT any normal cable, has to be crossover, will be marked with "X/O" on it) i did this to get my ps2 online.

or you could make it 100x easier on yourself and just buy a wireless PCI adapter for the desktop.

or if youre close enough to the router just run a wire to it (most wireless routers that ive seen also have up to 4 wired connections on them)

Yeah, either just patch cable yourself to the access point or get a wireless card for the desktop. Basic PCI cards aren't too expensive, and there are USB options out there too if you don't want to fuck around with opening the case.

sure is possible. its a pain in the ass to do on windows. As GSRCRXsi said, its easier and less of a hassle to buy the wireless adapter.

but not all wireless access points are also 4 port hubs...so i guess it just depends on what he is using for his wireless access point...but if it does have 4 ports on it...that would prollie be the best bet...

I bought a wireless USB ethernet adapter today. It works wonders and I've been downloading at 300kb/sec all day with 5 computers on our network.

Is that what I was talking about doing or something else?

Wireless USB adapters are great.. especially when a couple of my neighbors didn't know how to encrypt their network and I got free internet access for about 4 months :D
