Shredded Rubber: Killer Roads

I have recently discovered two world rally-worthy stretches of road near me. I'm
sure there's much more out there just itching for me to leave my mark.
As soon as I figure out a way to ~securely~ mount my camera I plan to post
some vids for everyone's enjoyment.

Here's a fun bit of the road I found today.

It's a couple miles of 2nd & 3rd gear tire scorchers. It's really hard to tell from the
map, but it's very narrow & on the side of a pretty steep hill (Drum Canyon). That
one hair-pin is wicked tight.


So I'd love to see contributions from other members along this topic. If you have
vids of your driving prowess, I invite you to post here. If not, why not share the
google map view of that magic bit of pavement that calls your name....

this road is about 20 minutes from me..

this isnt even all of the road it goes for a long time..

here is an actual shot of a section of the road.. it a pretty narrow road, i havent been there yet .. but i plan to within the next couple of weeks before it gets too cold and the tires dont wanna get traction..

Elevation ranges from 880m to 370m. Grades on this can be as steep as 19%. But then again, it is a mountain. Heh.

It's loads of fun, especially in the heat of the summer when grip is at its best. The worst part of this "track" is the grade it's on. It's imperative that you stay in 2nd on most of it. My best time is 39:05.38.

I almost forgot about this one. A friend here took me on it one day in his Subaru STI. There's no way in hell I'd ever try it in my honda. All dirt.

How did you save the google map picture I can't figure it out lol!

There should be a key on your keyboard 'print screen' or 'prt sc'. However it's marked pressing it copies a snapshot of whatever's on your screen. You can then open paint (or whatever) paste it in as image & crop it down, & save it as .jpg...at least that's how I do it.

I really should set up my laptop in the car w/ google earth so I can look for this stuff while I'm out.

i need to get a tripod and rig it up like Andrew did w/ fishing string.. haha.. or find some way to mount it behind my rear view mirror or something..

I was actually thinking bungee cords + p-side head rest.

It's going to have to be completely immobile though, because not only are these roads a little on the rough side but I'm also still suffering from the 'shakes'. It really feel like the whole car is going to come apart at the seams....

i think something that clipped on the back of the rear view that held the camera still would be a cheap way of mounting the camera.. but you'd have to come up with it on your own..
i seen this too. .. you might be able to do something with your rear deck lid on the CRX

Honestly, the camera may be too heavy for the rearview.

Ok here we go.. this one is pretty fun it's out in pretty much the middle of nowhere in the Tahoe National Forest for most of it I think. Big elevation changes too.. and that's only part of it

So while the vid is uploading to youtube, let me tell you the tale of the drum canyon fail vid. First a couple disclaimers. One: I'm not a professional driver & this is not a race car, it's my DD with a few minor upgrades. Secondly, I'm not a proffessional filmographer.

I got a mini tripod & some little bungees @ WalMart & strapped my digi camera to the p-side headrest. Seemed pretty secure & the camera said I had 91min of free space, so off I go. Well, I probably got a llittle carried away, went into a left turn too hot & ended up in the ditch. Thank god I didn't go off the other side of the road where there is no ditch or guardrail to keep me from heading down the side of the mtn.

So I pull over at the first available turn out to assess the damage & review the vid so far. Memory card full? WTF? It had stopped recording minutes earlier! Damnitalltohell! Luckily there didn't seem to be any real damage once I brushed off the dirt & reattached the under bumper trim.
Here's a couple pics I took once I got into town:

There was a bunch of dirt & crap crammed between the tire & the rim which I dug out w/ leatherman, but you can still see where the tire is not seated all way.

So, after that little scare I reduced the resolution of the vid to conserve memory, replaced the camera in his spot, & was much more careful for the second 1/2 of the canyon.

When I watched the 1st 1/2 it looked perfect as far as the camera's ability to see thru my dirtyass windshield. I had to dump that to make room on the card, tho. I don't know why, exactly, but for the 2nd 1/2 everything outside the car is all washed out so you can't really see what's going on. Real shame.

I'll try to fix it by adjusting the contrast or whatever, but I don't think I have an .avi editor. YouTube now says: Uploaded (processing, please wait) so I will post vid for your 'enjoyment' when it's ready.

with those tires i wouldnt want to make any spirited runs.. get some new tires before you head out next time and you probably wont end up in a ditch

I know I know... I was kidding about the po'boy slicks. It actually rained here the other day & it had me fearing for my life. Not fun, but new tires are what? $70 to $100ea depending.
I've gotta' make these last as long as possible.

Anyway, here's the vid. Really wish I had vid of hitting the ditch. Pretty dramatic the way the road goes left & the car goes straight...

I apologize again for the crap quality. I probably won't try this again until I get some new shoes for the car....
