Idol gets stuck / Gas peddle gets stuck

Hello again. I've come up with another problem with my 95 ex civic. I'm sure someone can help me with this one as well.

ok... most cases it only happen after hitting high rpm's and after coming to a stop my gas peddle feels like its stuck. I have to give it a slightly forceful pump for it to come loose. I thought it was the throttle cable get'n stuck within the plastic casing but a few months ago my throttle cable actually snapped and had to replace it. Problem still there. After that I tried greasin' up the "throttle catch?" (that thing you use to rev your engine from under the hood) But that didn't seem to do anything. Now just to give you an idea of how much it gets stuck... the gas peddle doesn't bend to the floor and spring back... it just doesn't go anywhere untill i kick it.

On the other hand, there are times that i'm just cruisin' to work through traffic (1st gear, 2nd gear, 1st gear... stop n go.) and I can hear/feel my engine idoling higher than it's supposed to. I give my gas a quick tap, its not stuck, but i hear/feel the idol go back to normal.

Any and all opinions are appreciated.

Try cleaning out the inside of your throttle body.. I've never seen them get as bad as you described but I'm sure it's possible. Get a can of carb/throttle body cleaner and a rag and spray a bunch of it on the rag. Then hold your throttle plate open and try to reach in as far as you can and clean off all the black deposits. If it's really bad you might have to remove the throttle body and clean it that way.

If that doesn't help make sure nothing is binding up between your pedal and the throttle linkage.. but since you already replaced the cable that's probably not the issue..

Hmm... thanks for all the input4. I have tried cleaning out the throttle body - almost emptied an entire can all together. I was told to expect a lot of smoke coming out of the exhaust but didn't get hardly any at all. I suppose that's a good thing, but I take pretty good care of my car as is. The main reason i cleaned it out was because I keep hearing a slight hissing sound from my throttle body. I doubt that has anything to do with my peddle catching but ... hey if anyone knows something about that =) I'm all ears.

Again, thanks for the input. Anything else come to mind that might pose a problem?

Why on earth would you spray almost an entire can of carb cleaner INTO your engine? Not very smart

Do it right. Take it off, disassemble it, clean it, reinstall it.
Also check the allignment of your throttle valve(butterfly valve). It might have worn a groove in the throttle body opening making a 'notch' to rest in, causing it to stick. if need-be, do a little 'porting' by running some high grit sandpaper over it.


The hissing could be anything from a vacuum leak to just regular sounds of your intake sucking in air. Do you have an aftermarket intake? The hissing your probably hearing is that.

lol well i'm glad someone went to school for all this stuff because it's obvious i didn't, but thanks for rip'n (ripping) me another asshole anyways. Without responding to most of the constructive criticism, thanks for the input. I'm on my way to check for any wedged areas. As for the hissing sound... i do have an intake, but the hissing is coming directly from inside the throttle body so i'll check for any leaks there also. Thanks again

No problem, man. Just trying to help, and theres no reason to beat around the bush.

The only thing that comes to mind would be the throttle body gasket. I'd recommend replacing it and see if that does the trick.

this may sound pretty dumb, but I had a throttle that stuck on wide open sometimes because my gas pedal got stuck under the floormat.

^Thats not a very rare problem. Just cut the foam-insulator thats attached to the floorboard and it'll stop.

I had the same throttle problem. The throttle would sometimes feel stuck after beating on the car a little. It also got really stuck after sitting for a few days w/o moving. It ended up being the butterfly valve binding against the walls of the throttle body. I took the throttle off, completely cleaned it, and messed with the idle adjustment screw a little. It seems that if the screw is backed all the way out, the throttle closes too much, and binds shut. I found that by slightly increasing idle with the screw, the plate is no longer shutting all the way, causing it to bind,

And the hissing sound is prolly the sound of air traveing through the idle valve when idling.

is the hissing sound very prominant? if its the IACV, then you should only be able to hear it by listening closely. If its a loud noise, then its probably a vacuum leak
