Poor man's Type R + LS crank?

Alright, I have a pretty well built head from my B16A2, as well as high compression forged pistons for the same. The block is to the point of having to be sleeved, so I don't want to deal with it anymore. I'm trying to find another stock bore block to build this in. I would prefer a GSR block/crank, but I am having a VERY hard time finding them. However, LS blocks and cranks seem to be a dime a dozen. So I got to thinking, IF I can find a good GSR block, and a good LS crank, and I get a set of forged rods for an LS, and put all that together with my B16A2 head, I'd have the killer head, a strong ass block, and the longer crank stroke, which would yield more displacement and power.

My question is, has anyone here actually DONE this? If so, did you run into any problems? Is there any additional machining needs to be done? Any clearance issues with the pistons and head or block and crank? I think that we're going to block off the piston oil squirters, so that won't be an issue if they won't clear with that crank anyways. Can I keep the girdle in the bottom end? I don't mean to sound rude, but I don't want to know what your cousin's neighbor's girlfriend's nephew heard about this build. I need to hear from people with PERSONAL EXPERIENCE on this, and I need to know QUICK. This motor has to be IN the car in less than 2 weeks! So, any help you could give me would be GREAT. Thanks.

I know that if you use the LS crank AND rods it will be too short and you will loose compression. The B18B (ls) deck height is 211.85mm and the B18C deck height is 212.37mm.

Why not just buy the LS block and use that if you are getting forged rods anyway. Swap over your main girdle, oil pump, water pump, high compression pistons, and Tuner Toys rods. Then buy a golden eagle LS/Vtec kit which includes EVERYTHING that you need to put the Vtec head on the ls block. They only extra expense that you will have going this way over the other is the ls/vtec kit. But I know that this will work rather then having to rely on the gsr block and ls crank maybe working.

I appreciate the input and all, so don't get me wrong, but right now we're using a .040 head gasket in order to keep compression under 12:1, so if I lose a little compression, I can go with a .030 or stock .029 head gasket and get it back, AND I don't have to "deal" with the LS VTEC head thing. But that is a good point. I didn't think about the deck height difference. So thanks for that. :)

yup no prob. just thought I'd put it out there.

If you're just here for someone to pat you on the ass and tell you "yes"...
Ya thanks smart ass. Trust me, I don't need some random guy from wherever's approval to do a build. If you READ the post, I was asking if anyone has EXPERIENCE with this build, and if they ran into any unexpected problems or anything with the build. But thanks for the uncalled for sarcasm. That's rad. I dig that. So go fuck yourself.

There's only one sure fire way to find out if this will work. Try it and see where your piston sits. Then check your piston to valve clearance to make sure the valves won't smack your piston with your high lift cam. If it doesn't work then you are out the cost of an ls crank and all the bearings you will need which as we all know are not cheap if you are doing it right with honda bearings.

Might I add that using the LS block and buying the ls/vtec kit might save you some money because the difference in cost for the ls block vs the gsr block would make up for it. Plus you would have something that we KNOW works.

I don't think it is a good idea and I personally wouldn't do it.

If you have a little extra cash you can spare at the moment just buy a GSR longblock. Pull the head off, use all your parts building your motor, then sell the head and all the block internals. It will wind up costing about the same as just buying a GSR short block, just with a little extra effort.

Hahahaha. Dipshit n00bs.

"I like, totally have this idea right? So like, I'm gonna do something that a little research would've told me is a bad idea, but I don't want to hear anything other than 'yes'."

That about sums it up.

Use the GSR rods, genius.

Goddamn! Are you kidding me? We have an all Honda forum for just AZ that I'm on, and most people are pretty cool and helpful when someone asks an honest question, so I guess I just assumed that Honda Swap would follow suit. I guess not. But then again, I should form my opinion of the whole site, not on one asshole who is 30 and still watching cartoons, quoting stupid movies, and appears to be of the caliber of intelligence that my 12 year old kid brother surpassed last year.

And for the record, all that I am proposing here is a stroked GSR, which is completely doable if care is taken to make sure that the piston oil squirters are cleared or else eliminated all together. So I'm curious as to what this "little research would've told me is a bad idea" is, as I have yet to find anything in the research that I have done saying it is not a good choice... I'd love to hear this. All I was looking for here was input from anyone who has EXPERIENCE with this build, or any build that wasn't done from the factory, (which I gather is not the category you would fit into), and if they ran into any problems.

I love this part; "Use the GSR rods, genius."

Define "genius"...is it the person who just keeps doing the same thing that has been done a million times, and requires NO innovation, just because it's been proven already by someone else? Or is it the one that goes out on a limb and tries something out that may or may not work, but if it does, will be FAR beyond anything done or even attempted by the afore mentioned "genius"...I mean hell, if everyone were nutless wonders like you, there would be no "LS/VTEC" build, there would be no "CR-VTEC/B20VTEC" build, there would be none of that. So I say again, go fuck yourself.

Grow a pair, get off your high horse, pull your head out of your ass, and stop acting like you have any reason to be shit talking anyone else's ideas. You don't.

How many times do we have to tell you that it is not worth it? It's been done, its not worth it.

Like you said, both this and the LS-VTEC were tried by innovators. The LS-VTEC proved to be very worth it and in some cases, stronger and more powerful than anything Honda made. An LS crank in a GSR will work. It just doesn't produce the gains I feel are needed to warrant doing it. Obviously your set on doing it anyway. So go do it. It will work.

The fact of the matter is that me and Blanco have been here for a long time because we have a lot of knowledge about Hondas. Him much more so than me. You want respect, advice, and knowledge? Treat us with respect. Why the fuck do we want to help someone who is a dick head. How about you get off your high horse and realize that you don't have this knowledge. That's why you are here.

that was interesting
blanco has always lead me in the right direction and i would take his advice if i were you
interesting idea though

I agree that I am here asking a question because I lack knowledge in certain areas. However in mt first post I asked QUITE CLEARLY for input from people who have had EXPERIENCE in this area, not from someone who has heard this or talked to this guy or whatever. I'm not interested in what other people think or have heard. I am interested in learning from other people's experiences. And as for the respect issue and needing to give it to Blanco, why should I give him any respect? Because his avatar says "senior member" under it? Sorry, it takes a little more than that to get respect from me. I'll tell you how NOT to get respect from me. You can start by answering an honest question posed by me with a smart-ass arrogant answer. There's a good way for me to no longer give a shit what you have to say. And that's just what Blanco did. Look at it this way; you and him both gave me essentially the same answer, yes? However you did it in a polite and seemingly well informed way, and I appreciate it. Although you don't have experience with this particular build, you passed on the info that you DID have on the subject in a respectful manner, and that shows me that there is a reason for me to respect you. On the other hand, Blanco pops off with this "holier than thou, you're a fucking idiot" attitude, when I had done NOTHING to provoke it. So why the fuck should I respect him? I don't see any reason. Do you?

My point is this; people come on here for advice and to learn from what other people have experienced. If this is the attitude and demeaning way that people can count on being spoken to on this forum, then I don't think there's much reason to use it, is there? I'll stick to AZHT and Honda Tech and I'm sure that I'll get the info I am looking for without the fuckstick attitude. Thanks boys.
