Honda D engine
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mini-Me
One of the most popular and effective methods of achieving greater power from a D-series motor is replacing the cylinder head with one from a more powerful D-series motor. This is usually done between D16A6 and D16Z6 or D16Y7 and D16Y8 engines. The Z6 and Y8 heads are VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) equipped, and increase horsepower significantly over stock levels. This operation is known as a "Mini Me" or partial swap. Mini Me's are popular because they offer a substantial performance upgrade by adding VTEC to the motor at a relatively low cost.
Otherwise, I say go j-spec.

Doing a mini me swap to the average person is gonna be way more difficult than just doing a straight drop in motor like a ZC. Hell, a B Series swap in some cases is less confusing to the average person than a mini me.

Go J-Spec? so he should choose a ZC over a USDM LS swap? Please don't get caught up in the "J-spec/JDM" hype. JDM doesn't mean better by any means.

Now to answer the question. Choosing a swap is based upon mainly your budget. If you're on a tight budget, HMotorsOnline.com sells the single cam ZC for $400 and the DOHC ZC for $600. If you have money to go B-Series then go for it. Set a goal, look at your budget, then go from there. Goodluck.

dont use a zc, my buddy has one in his rex with every bolt on, its quick but its maxed out unless he uses nitro, super or turbo. parts are also hard to find, just drop a b in and b done, or a better d series like d16z6

first of all, think baby steps, if you are already blowing up engines use one that is cheap to replace. another A6 or single cam ZC both are very cheap compared to other honda engines, and both have high potential for a relatively small investment. I dont know your budget but a good start would be a single cam 1.6 with a light flywheel and a good clutch. Then, start saving for a turbo.

another plus is if you keep using the same type of engine you will start to collect a lot of spare parts, saving yourself $$$ for tuning.

I am racing this car as a oval tracker

If I got a single cam zc what the power on that engine I would like to be around 135 to 140 hp, would i have to change wiring or other components on the zc or would like to pull out the old one and not have to change to much. We have to stay stock appearing on the outside. how bout changing injectors? thanks for the info so far

stock 120 HP is not bad at all, and this wires right up to your factory Si harness.

I tried to put a link to Hmotors on here but it didn't work.....

The single cam ZC is a decent upgrade for you. It'll drop straight in.

If you decided to go with the DOHC ZC, it's still the same process as the single cam ZC except for a little distributor wiring. You just have to move the two crank angle sensor wires that currently go to the distributor and wire them to the crank angle sensor on the exhaust cam.

thanks for all the help, now I just gta find a zc Hmotors lookd like the were sold out of them anywhere else to try? Also are there different pgmfi intakes cause I have a couple and some say pm6 hf3 and hf 4 if i remember rite, if so with ones the best?

If you chip the pm6 it will run any of the OBD0 engines as in ZC or D series, As to engine any D series non vtec is your cheapest choice, with add on's 120 hp, if you want to upgrade to a vtec a single cam will be the second choice for ease and cost you can do a one wire and keep obd0 with chipping the pm6 you will have 125-145. If you have a couple of thousand get a B series swap and you will have 160 or so. Add a cheap turbo system to an engine and boost to 8-10 psi using stock block you can expect from 35-50% more power from which ever choice you make. And what ever you decide on get a stout clutch to install while the motor is out and if you have the coin, an lsd.
