trying to break the cross country speed record.

That's the coolest thing I've read in a long time.. I wish I could do that

Nice toys in there. Everyone should remember that not only were the original records set without as much Police technology, it was also set with shitty headlights, asbestos brake pads, drum brakes, leaf springs and in the DEAD of a midwest night.

People who did this kind of driving are pioneers and simply, "bad asses" the like we won't see again until we're setting records for single man space flights around Jupiter and back in 3 weeks.

It's nice to touch on this, I've been building up the necessary bits for a CT to CO 24 hour ride for about 7 years now. It's not easy . my CRX did Chicago to CT in 18 hours with two drivers. I did Denver to CT in 27 hours. Average speed was more like 70 mph (Which was break neck, believe me) but the pace was also more relaxed, what with not so much as a CB or radar detector.

I'd rather deal with the cars and cops from the 70s then the police of today. Cars of today are much nicer but keep in mind, back then people ran from the police often and easily got away.

haha on the 80mpg metro, and holy balls on that article...there wasn't an option of just reading part of it - if you weren't sucked in you just flat out don't love to drive. thx jeffie!

ya, like someone i know who had a 69 chevelle 396 in the early 70s that used to drive down main st in a small town, then lay down a couple black strips right by the police station just for fun.

I've done half country sprints a few times. Central texas to the southern most part of florida, non stop (gas stops only, anyway)

Then I did a run to Vegas, LA, and Palm Springs. I did stop in vegas for a night, and stopped in palm springs because they were having their yearly festival. Blew straight through LA.

It was the TX-FL-TX trip when I realized that my CRX Si got 29mpg at a constant 110-130mph. I was very impressed with that =D Fueled up in sourthern florida, and ran a full tank of gas at 110+.

CRXs have the most comfortable touring seats I've had the pleasure of sitting in. They just fit me incredibly well.

If I were to do a full on cross country trek, I'd gear up a N/A unswapped CRX Si with the basic bolt ons, a quiet muffler, skinny tires, some basic aero gear, and a pair of 20 gallon auxillary tanks. At about 2700 miles cross country, I'd have to stop and fill up one time.

wow read the whole thing. I got sucked in and couldnt stop lol, awsome shit

 i agree on the seats/comfort factor, and the Si. they're just hella-fun to drive and 40mpg rocks too.

PS i wrote the author of the "The Pedal-to-the-Metal, Totally Illegal, Cross-Country Sprint for Glory" article and told him it was the best article i've ever read...and Wired emailed and said they're going to publish my letter. huh.

Wow, what a great read. Dangerous and reckless, but definitely thrilling and it seems like the guys knew what they were doing.
