I guarantee you that everyone on this forum who has performed their own swaps know WAY MORE than a paid, careered mechanic. Its not easy, but it is worth it.
How do you figure? I'm a career mechanic, I've got several ASE's, and even more Chrysler-specific certifications...I actually pull apart and rebuild motors, diagnose problems (that most of the time the vehicles have been to other shops and they tell the customer 'we can't figure it out, take it to a dealership), and have yet to run into something that I haven't been able to fix...and I haven't had a SINGLE comeback...
whereas someone who performs their own swap unbolts a coupela motor mounts, removes 2 cv axles, unplugs a couplea harness plugs, MAYBE adds a few wires from a color-by-numbers picture online that doesn't even remotely RESEMBLE an actual wiring diagram, but 99% of the time doesn't actually know WHAT they're doing?
Why are there so many 'I followed the how-to, and my car won't start' posts? Because being a career mechanic is more than just pulling and swapping motors. You have to actually figure out what's wrong and fix it, not just throw another motor in. I'd like ANYONE on here who isn't a career mechanic, whose only experience is that of doing theirs or their friends' motor swaps and basic stuff on thier honda, to take a shot at even HALF the tickets I pull in a week. 'Car will only start and run when headlights are on', for example. Would a DIY-swapper know how to correct this? Probably not.
I know you made a post later in this thread about that comment, but I still felt that I should put in my .02 on the matter.
Also, to norcalgsr, your comment about people who repair cars only know how to work on stock cars from the factory, I also think that may be a bit far-fetched...I work at a dealership, and out of all the techs in the shop there are maybe 2 or 3 of them who don't have at least a very decent amount of aftermarket and/or performance knowledge, and they're the guys on the lube rack. Most of the guys here HAVE race cars that they do everything on themselves, and it's not uncommon on a saturday to have 2 or 3 of the tech's personal playtoys on the racks...maybe in your part of the country, but not here.
To the original poster, you get bashed because you're a fucking idiot.
