How many of you guys switch to winter tires when it gets colder?

I've been running Kumho ASX tires for awhile and they do really well in the snow. I haven't bought a set of winter tires/wheels yet because I'm planning to get a 4x4 to go snowboarding with, but if that doesn't work out I will likely be buying a set of snow tires next year. However I have been very impressed by the ASX's ability in the snow so far, and they also handle pretty well on dry/wet pavement too. If I had to drive in snow most of the time I would definitely have some snow tires on hand though.. a good snow tire beats the pants off any all season tire designed to be run in the snow IMO.

Or summer tires in the summer and summer tires in the winter. S-03s do surprisingly well in the ice and snow. ;)

Well lets c... I run all Season and Summers here in Vermont and in the winter I pull out the snow mobile or the Rust Bucket car with Hawk's on it worth more then the car hehe... so were is the studded option?

S0-3's are out of production. there' like 2 odd ball sizes left.

that, and texas winter doesn't count. lol

I'd prefer to run summer tires in the summer and a 4x4 in the winter, but I'm going to have to wait until next season now lol :)

i think everyone shou;d run summer tires in the summer and winter tires in the winter.

winter sport M3's FTW

So far, those are pretty good tires. I have some concerns about how they have been handling at 170km/h though. A little pressure change seems to have sorted it out though.

Studded? Haha. Aren't those illegal in most states?

I use rain tires in the summer, because here it's more wet than dry during the summer. Yeah, you do have some good days/weeks, but if you're caught in the pouring rain with some street tires, you're fucked. Uniroyal RainSport ftw. RainSport 1 Uniroyal Tyre Specification - Topgear

I'm really wishing that I bought that audi quattro a few months back now. All that was wrong with it was: Rusted out exaust, fuel pump clogged, bad sparkplugs, a little rust. But, honestly, that would have made a great winter-beater after some tlc.

haha I was gonna say... the only ice and snow Cal see's is the little bit of frost that forms every few months on his windshield from those chilly 50 degree mornings. :p

winter here is pretty much a couple of days out of the year with a cool breeze ...

at least thats how it has been last couple years.

i've done 120mph on them in the sti, and 110 mph in the 2.5RS.

they are pretty damn stable.

but, keep in mind, nearly all snow tires are Q rated, for 99mph. so anything after that, you're entering the danger zone.

BFG-Sports all year round.

Just keep it parked in the winter. . .

Nah, it gets down a lot colder than that. We dip into the 20s and 10s every year. I know it's nothing compared to your northeast temps, but when it ices over (and it does every year), it really sucks because most of the people around here know nothing about car control on the ice.

I live in Oregon and I run 195/50/15 cooper cobras all year around. Even last year when I was using the Headlights on my hatch to push snow down my driveway :D.

For how long though? I know it dips pretty cold down there, but I wouldn't think the ice would be around much longer after sunrise. Ice doesn't scare me because it's usually in small patches in the long stretches away from intersections. It's when the snow turns to slush, freezes, gets rolled over, reslushes then refreezes over and over again in the intersections before plows can come through it.

Thats how I bent a rim last February.

Get on a big patch of ice the only thing you can do and hope something grabs and keeps you pointing in the direction you want to go. But most of the time the patches are so small that you'll slide before you realize it and then you're back under control.

LAWL I ran a set of Nokian Studded Hawks up to around 130 MPH and they held ... only thing was hearing click click click click lawl, and they had almost like ZERO grip on dry roads haha... But in vermont what ya have to run 80% of the time in the MT's lawl...at lower speeds of corse! :)
