Well boys and girls I thought I would share the news with you all. Not that to many will probably care but non the less I am excited. About a month and a half ago I applied for a job with the VA Medical Center. Bare in mind I am 21 years old, have never worked for the government in any way shape or form, with no military background. The job I was applying for was for the position of Information Security Officer. Just this quarter I will be graduating with my AS from ITT. I got word today that they are offering me the job. I do not have my start date yet but I am going to call and give my acceptance tomorrow morning.

This kind of opportunity is almost unheard of in the VA. I will go from making about 25k a year to mid to upper 30k per year and will no longer be working 60 hours a week during the summer and have my hours cut back to about 30 during the winter. This job will do a lot of great things for me and my family, and I thought I would share.

the VA is a sinking ship of red tape and beurocracy. I do work with them at Yale and it's the WORST place to be IT .

good luck, and be patient.

govt jobs for the win. it won't be like anything you're used to. just remember when in rome do like the romans. see how every one else works there and do like they do.

Good advice, I can't stand that environment because I work at a faster pace and do more "status hits" to check up on items that I own. It leads to frustration.

Things move REALLY SLOWLY in that environment and no one takes accountability. If you're driven by anything that is special (Covey techniques, ITIL, problem management or ownership issues, you'll hate it)

Thanks for all the support everyone. My old man has been with the VA for over ten years and they have treated him pretty well. An ISO basically writes the computer / network policy's for a site. I have not found much information on it but I start the 26th of this month so I guess I will know exactly what it is in a week or so. Do you remember all of those SS numbers being taking off site? Well the ISO is responsible for preventing things like that.
