im watching tv and a commercial for Sam Adams pops up and they mention a beer called Utopias that they make. that didnt catch my attention but what did was the fact they said its illegal in 11 states. so i did a lil research on samadams.com and looked it up. heres what i found:

Truly the epitome of brewing's two thousand year evolution, Samuel Adams Utopias® offers a flavor not just unlike any other beer but unlike any other beverage in the world. Its warm, sweet flavor is richly highlighted with hints of vanilla, oak and caramel. With an alcohol content of 27% by volume, its complexity and sweet, malty flavor is reminiscent of a deep, rich vintage Port, fine Cognac or aged sherry while being surprisingly light on the palate. And like the world’s finest after-dinner drinks, Samuel Adams Utopias is not carbonated and should be served at room temperature.

In one of many examples where Samuel Adams Utopias pushed the boundaries of beer into the realm of other fine beverages, it received the highest recommendation (96-100 points) from the prestigious Wine Enthusiast Magazine (November, 2003 edition).

Due to legal restrictions, Samuel Adams Utopias is not offered in the states of Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Washington, or West Virginia.

has anyone tried this stuff? its supposedly about $100 or so.

Have not heard about it but for 100 bucks a bottle I could buy alot of jack. Now if it where offered at a party then id be all over it.

Shit, not offered here :( My cousin works at a beverage distribution place; I can ask him if they can get that stuff.

It's quite an interesting beer that I will have to try someday. The main reason it is expensive is because of the sheer process the beer has to take to be made. It has to go through several yeast fermentations (ale and champange yeasts), then they add maple syrup for more fermentable sugars under secondary fermentation, then they age it in a few different types of barrels - three I believe. Think of the $100 as mostly handling charge.

Be warned though, this will most likely be the sweetest beer you've ever had in your life. You only want to drink it about 1 oz. at a time, and I mean sip from a shot glass. Probably close to a barleywine or under-hopped stout. I've heard its like a sweet, maple candy.

P.S. They only brew 3,000 bottles a year. Good luck getting one - you better check when the next batch will be out.

I don't know how they get away with calling it beer. To brew anything with an alcohol content that high you need to use something other than brewers yeast. I've had the triple bock and it's was ok, different but ok. If someone offered me a taste I'd try the utopia but I don't think I'd ever buy it. Plus my home brews have been coming out way better then anything I can buy locally, my last brew started with an OG of 1.050, currently in the secondary fermenter.

Sounds interesting. Sam Adams have a few other super special beers around christmas time like a Chocolate Bach that is like 20% abv.

nice; kit or your own recipe? 1.050 is going to bring in a nice alcohol level...

my own recipe. I'm hoping for a 4.5-5.5% I'll post an update after I get an FG reading.

Someone else homebrews? Nice.

CRX-YEM, we should get you on HandsOnKitchen with a beer recipe section. I just started this fall and would love to see some of your recipes, failures, problems, etc.

I don' see CA on that list. I'm gonna go buy some.

You need to brush up on your Reinheitsgebot .

exactly, using touch of maple syrup does not fit into that law. Also it does not really bare any resemblance to beer as it is not even carbonated. it's almost like a malt liquor

The point is the law didn't originally even include yeast - so its kind of stupid to think that by adding something it's not a beer. Probably just the closest thing/process.

Wow, something good that ISNT illegal in Massachusetts.

I might scope it out. But $100, damn. That can buy a lot of Winter Ale.

Also, if you are in the market for a new beer, try the Sam Cherry Wheat Ale. Wicked complex flavor, but a very good meal beer.

Hasn't cherry wheat been out for a long time. I had it like 10 years ago never again. I would rather drink Guinness from a bottle.

hmmm...outlawed in GA...grrrrrr...but FL is right under me...hmmmm

Cheery wheat is ok, I can stomach one of them once I a great while, all sam adams brews are a little on the sweet side
