hey i just got home from the honda dealership and got a quote on work for my car. The problem is that when i start the car and its cold it starts at 3000 rpm and then once it heats up the rpms fluctuate non stop from 1500 to 2200. when i drive its fine but when i put the clutch in or put the car in neutral the rps fluctuate again. they told me i need a new throttle body, a tune up and new timing belt kit which means water pump ac belt etc. also i need a new dist cap and wires and i guess the bushings on my rear trailing arm are cracked so i need to change them out. they quoted me about 2000 with tax. i was looking up aftermarket parts and its like a few hundred for everything. is this job easy to do or will i have a hard time doing it? let me know what i can do thanks

Your problem it's just timming... i am not sure what year is your honda but if you dont have a timming gun it would be better to take it to a local mechanic.
parts are not expensive, look for MSD cap, cables and blaster coil to increase some power... Blue Greddy Timming Belt and you can find a new water pump at your local Auto Zone or ebay... Afetr you have all parts take it to a local mechanic, maybe $500.00 with parts and labor...

get msd cap and wires as he said^..then go to autozone and get the rest of the shit..take it home and begin the project..the cap and wires are easy as hell to do..and the timing belt is just a little bit harder if you know what your doing...do the work yourself..and spen the extra $1000+ that you wouldve paid them..and get yourself some more parts...1000 can get you some good shit

The fluctuating idle isn't caused by the timing it's caused by either air in the cooling system or a bad idle speed control valve. An MSD cap, cables, and coil will not make any more power over the stock ignition system unless something is already worn out. Running a Greddy timing belt on a stock engine is a waste of money. And finally, running an Autozone or Ebay water pump, unless it's OEM Honda, is not a good idea..

What model is your Del Sol? Need to know which engine you have to help with the fluctuating idle problem.

Depending on your mechanical ability you should be able to complete most of the repairs yourself. If you're not comfortable changing the timing belt I would probably have someone else do it for you, but for everything else you should be able to handle it. For the tune up all you need to replace is the spark plugs, cap, rotor, and ignition wires.

As far as the rear trailing arm bushings it's a very common problem with Hondas, and as long as they are not torn or split causing free play you can leave them alone. Most places will try to sell them to you as soon as they see any cracks in them, but honestly there really isn't any reason to do so. I've done plenty of alignments on cars with cracked trailing arm bushings and it does not have any effect on anything for a daily driven car.

And I would also make sure you are using OEM parts for everything.

the year is 93 and its an all stock car just used mainly for work and back was supposed to be a project car but didnt have time its got the fuel efficient 1.5l engine

Already covered it.

they wanted to give me the timing package which had the water pump ac belt timing belt etc. is there a site i can get everything i need or just surf and try to find it? also can this be done in a day easy?

I'm not sure of anywhere that sells it as a kit, but the only things in a timing belt 'package' are the timing belt, water pump, and tensioner. The drive belts wouldn't normally be included in a timing belt kit, but since you have to remove them in order to replace the T-belt it's a good idea to replace them at that time anyway.

It can be done easily in a day depending on your experience working on cars.. I can do that job in about 3 hours, but I also do it for a living so it's all relative to your mechanical ability. If you have some experience working on cars and have a repair manual you should be able to handle it in a day.

The cheapest place I've been able to find OEM Honda stuff at is here.. Majestic Honda - The Internet's #1 Honda Automotive Parts Store

final question, is there any specific brands that are better or anything is about the same? and as far as the msd wires, cap and rotor and coil will it make any difference or just stick with oem parts? also whats better a 4-2-1 headers or a straight 4-1? i would guess the 4-2-1 since it would flow better but not sure and is it a good idea to get a dual exhaust system rather than a single or is there no difference? thanks for all the help i was about to wast 2000 on pretty much labor

For what you're looking at replacing I would use only OEM parts. The wires, cap and rotor will not make you any more power over stock Honda parts, and in some cases the aftermarket stuff does not fit as well as the OEM. There are tons of Honda cars around running 3-400+ HP on the stock ignition system so there's no reason to use anything else.

As far as the headers, a 4-1 header tends to make more power in the upper RPM range while a 4-2-1 will make more power in the midrange, so it really depends on what you are looking for in that respect. However considering you have a D series engine and it's probably your daily driven car a 4-2-1 would probably work better in your situation.

Dual exhaust will not help you out at all performance wise.. there's really no point in doing that on a 4 cylinder engine. Just run a single exhaust with the proper size tubing for your engine plans and you'll be good.

And if you have any other questions don't be afraid to ask..
