So I recently drove a 2002 Golf GTI that I planned on selling my honda and getting. Even though it's automatic, the combination of what seems to be turbo lag and/or terrible lower gearing makes it feel pretty damn slow 0-40. The response time between accelerating and hitting the gas is also quite bad during that time. Once you get over 40, the pickup is awesome. Either way, I still want to get something newer if the price margin isn't huge between it and the profit from my car. It has been garage kept since they bought it 4 years ago and it has 17k miles on it. They're asking 11k, but I wont be paying that much if I get it.

So what do you guys think about these things? Would you trade up your honda for one?

i would never get an automatic GTI (unless it was the r32 with the DSG tranny)

driving an automatic compact car would make me miserable

ps i fixed your post so you dont have to scoll 4 pages to the right to read it all :)

Thanks for fixing it. I didn't even notice I messed it up. I'll be sure to preview it next time =).

And I'm with you about the automatic thing, I despise it myself... But if I can get a car that I don't have to worry about anything going wrong with while away at school, that would be a blessing in itself. That's the only reason why I'm looking for a new car.

I don't know what it is but I had ZERO(well one problem, read on...) problems with my 04 Golf and I also know a few people with 01-04 GTi's and a few with VR6's and NO ONE has ever had any problems. There are things that they dislike about the cars but never any 'OH NOES, OMG THIS CAR IS A PEICE OF SHIT' problems. They've just had a ton of little retarded problems with theirs. Like the window clips that hold the glass in place breaking, radio stops working, ect... The smog pump (I think that's what they said it was) on mine went bad after having the car for only a few weeks but they replaced it under warranty and the problem never came back. Same goes for the problems on the GTi's mentioned above. IDK, maybe it's just luck... :shrug2:

That makes me happier than rabbit's post lol. Thanks for the info.

i personally think they are a little plastic... and lots of people were having 'little' problems with these cars that were primarily electric.

i think if you did some more consumer research on this car it would probably steer you away from buying it. but then again, if buying a newer compact puts your mind at ease and it's inevitably cheaper than a honda... it's your thing. but you are asking for opinions... i wouldn't buy one.

:)

you drive a honda and say VWs are "a little plastic" ???????? :wtf2:

Well to start off with it's a 99 2.0 GTI. First the MAF sensor stoped working I got it fixed and now it's throwing a code for the temp sensor in the MAF. Then in the coil pack it melted through the plastic and started shorting out causing a misfire in cylinder #4. There is a leak in the Evap system that I can't find. The power steering went out and I can't find the right high pressure hose or the right pump for the car. The drivers side door sensor doesn't work so when I go to set the alarm I have to unlock it then lock it for the alarm to set otherwise the doors won't lock. The sunroof sometimes will start to close get almost to the end and then be like "HAHA screw you!" and then open all the way again. The factory sterio stoped working so I had to get a new one. The lights behind the A/C pannel won't come on unless I hit the side of the console. One of the codes it threw said that there is not enough fuel going to the engine so it's running lean. One of the O2 sensors isn't working. And when I took the car to Autozone to have a diagnostic ran it shot out 8 different codes. This all started happening within a 1 month period. I almost forgot one of my brake pads fell off and the caliper messed up the rotor so I had to get a new caliper rotor and new brakes.

all the things

lol, yeah well the crx si, or any older hatch, makes up for that feel in its personality. i personally feel the newer golfs lack a similar type of personality and are equally if not more plastic.

i recently rode in the back seat of an e30 320 and loved it... many new cars to me just feel plastic and fluffy, the vw golfs and jettas especially, that's all...

and while i am thinking of it, why would you sell a honda which is easy and cheap to maintain and buy something more expensive to purchase and maintain. it really fails to make sense why the general public is constantly buying new cars. societal waste disposal at a great expense, i think...

99-01's suck.. they had the most problems from what i hear
I fucking hope so. Whiterabbit is scaring the shit out of me.

Get it and chip it.
That was one of my first thoughts, but it will still be an automatic:(

That car made me fall asleep on my keyboard.
Then your response should have been more along the lines of "That car maddlllleeiuo8723kjfeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"

I'd go for the VR6 if I were you. Worse gas mileage, but that engine is fantastic. It has massive torque.
I know this car was well maintained, rarely used, and I am going to get a really good deal. I can't exactly afford to be out shopping around and they will let me take it home before I sell my car cause I can't be without one for a day. These people came to me and mean well, which is why I'm considering it. Otherwise, I have no choice but to stick with my honda(That I do love :)).

Because I will be away from home, tools, and a spot to work on my car while at school. I will also be broke and busy as hell. Having a pretty much brand new car sure seems reasonable, eh?

What about your Ram?

You must be talking about the green 1500. I forgot about that build thread, I'll post an updated pic :). I decided I didn't have enough money to keep dumping into it and I refuse to build up a truck with parts I don't think will last very long(unless in some sort of hurry, which I wasn't). I got it so close and was going to finish it anyhow, but then my bro's truck took a shit. I sold it to him for all the money I've put into it and made him buy me food everyday I helped him work on it ^_^. It's up and running now, but with a tranny leak. It's not at my house though, so it's not my problem lol. I can't wait to get on my own feet so I can have some more projects!
