I have an exhaust leak at the manifold because one of the studs broke. Its a 98 2.3L vtec, sorry i dont know the engine name Hondas are still new territory to me.

I sure its going to be a pain to do. Which leads me to my next question
If I let the car reach normal operating temperature by idling and give it gas and so as the engine revs down it drops to 250 rpms sputters then dies. I have to keep giving it gas to keep it running. But if I let it die I can restart it immediately and its fine until I give it gas after it runs for a little bit. The only think of is that as the metal gets hot and expands the leak gets worse and by giving it gas the motor isnt able to build enough back pressure again.

I just did a complete tune on the car and it runs fantastic except for that. Drives like crap still after replacing a shift solenoid it was a little to late and the clutches that shift it from 1st to 2nd gear are toast.

I'm new to hondas too but if you have to "pump" the gas I'd suggest it's your fuel pump.

98 2.3L Vtec...you in America? I'm guessing you drive a Prelude.

Its an Accord. I dont think its a fuel pump because its fine until the engine is hot. I can let it run for hours just idling and it runs like a champ. But the sec I hit the gas after its warmed up I cant fully let go of it because the engine wants to die.

Clean out the IACV(make sure it's working too), clean out the TB, and check for vacuum leaks. Also, check your PCV valve; shake it and if you hear it rattle, it's still good. You can clean that too with some carb cleaner.

Also, when's the last time you had a tune-up?

On fuel injected cars, having to pump the gas does not indicate bad fuel pump. Instead, you check the fuel pressure.

how far in the head is the stud broke?? can you get a grip on it to pull it out?

Its broke flush with the outside of the manifold. I have been soaking the rest of the nuts with pb blaster so I dont break any trying to take them off. So how ever thick the manifold is thats how much of the stud is sticking out of the block still.

id say take off the exhaust mani....pb blaster is a good idea, it works good, prolly bout 1/4 in of the stud should be exposed..get some vise grips on that bitch and hope for the best to ease it out

this is how i would get it out. its not the best way unless you feel pretty good with oxicetilene torch. i would heat the block around the stud and i would take a sharp tiny chisle and get it on the outside and try bumping the bolt out . like little tiny bumps on the outside in a counter clockwise direction. make sure the chisle is sharp and you have a little mechanics hammer. also if you heat it with the torch use control. don't melt a hole in your head. but with alittle heat and a chisle you can get them out trust me. i got the one out of cavalier head the same way. and got a broken intake manifold bolt out of my honda the same way.

thanks for the tip. I will have to see if my girlfriends brother has gas for his torch.

I broke other stud taking the manifold off luckily after 2 hours of fight with it I was able to get one out. But when I attempted to get the one i was originally after I broke what was left of the stud off in the head. I care fully drilled it out I just have to run a tap in it and wait for my studs and manifold gasket to come in.

HMMM... whys the studs breaking? those nuts must be really corroded and froze on there

The reason why the first one broke to keep the story short the exhaust came a part and feel down right after the cat. Instead of my girlfriend tell me about she just continued to drive the car cause more of it to break.

But I feel like I am finally get some where with this thing. Replaced the stud and put a new gasket in. The leak is finally gone. I decided to take it for a short drive and the trans enough decided it want to cooperate, it shifted through every gear better than my other car which is only a year old.

I just cant figure out why the engine whats to die after reving after it has warmed up. If it would throw a code I would be able to find the problem. I already replaced the PCV valve, cleaned the TB, checked the IAVC. I will just have to have honda take a look when I bring it in for the ignition cylinder recall.
