Just getting started
I know I am green on this Honda scene, but I do know enough to know that a VTEC is good to have. I just purchaced a 94 Accord ( had a 91 Civic Hatchback) for $1000. Man said it was loosing water and he didn't know where. I did. Head gasket. I was boiling back over in the overflow. Anyway, What is a Vtec exactly and what should I look for to see if it is working like it should. I see some people are saying theirs doesn't work. Please help. Remember I am learning the honda thing. That does not mean I am an idiot. I did the head gasket on my own so I do know alittle bit just not the VTEC stuff. Thanks.:confused: My car has a 2.2 VTEC.
 
Also is it taboo to have an automatic in this game? If so do I need to look for a change? Got it for a steal with only 150k on it. I know it run 250k.
 
Run auto or manual whatever you want, but most prefer manual I'd never go auto personally.

Vtec = Variable Valve Timing and lift Electronically Controlled. If you have a check engine light and it throws a Vtec code, then it's not working. When you put the pedal to the floor things should really start pickin up around 4500-5000 rpm.

And for all you know it could crap out at 175k. It really depends on the condition of the motor and what it's been through.
 
if you really want to truly tell if vtec is working,wire in an led light,,the positive goes to the wire going into the solenoid.and the negative goes to a good ground..

Just test the solenoid. jump a lead from the relay box and connect it to the solenoids power supply and listen for the solenoid to "click". If it clicks, the solenoid is working fine. The vtec solenoid is located on the distributor side of the head infront or inback of the dizzy.

Single-cam VTEC is different than dual-cam VTEC. You're not really going to feel much of a difference when your VTEC kicks on. If you don't have any error codes than your VTEC is probably working fine.

So basicly I don't really have anything special. I need to do something different. If anyone can offer advise. I don't know what the limits are on these motors. If it was a Chevy I would know what to do. lol:) I was out in it earlier and got on it alittle bit and I did feel a little change at about 4k. The rev seemed to go up and she picked up a little bit.

sohc vtec hits so hard you can feel it vibrating in your underpants... dohc vtec...blah ;x
