With every gear ive worked with the numericaly higher the number the lower the ratio. the number describes the number of rotations on the input side per 1 revolution on the output side.
If you compare say, a B16 tranny to a B18B tranny, the ratios on the B16 tranny stay consistently higher and closer together than the ratios on the LS gearbox.
It's the same with final drives. The higher the ratio, the more aggressive the FD is. For example, the LS FD = 4.266 while the JDM ITR FD = 4.785.
