So according to their site a Mercury Mountaineer with a Stage 2 hitch can tow a CRX using their tow dolly, but a Ford Explorer with a Stage 2 hitch cant. Can someone answer that for me? I guess I wish my friend had a Mountaineer he was willing to let me borrow.
 
It should be the same, but my friend has pointed out that his Lincoln Navigator has a higher towing capacity than a Ford Excursion. His engine is the DOHC one, but that shouldn't really make that much of a difference.

I towed my NX2000 on a 4 wheel trailer from Boston with a half of a frame on my Pathfinder(that thing was a RUST BUCKET). You'll be fine.

i wanna know what CRX yer towin and why :D
 
the ford explor tranny is weaker and cant really handle the towein as much you can do it but the more you do it the more damage it will do to you tranny the mercury has a better built tranny and can handle the extra work

When trying to reserve a tow dolly online, uhaul wont even let you continue when the Explorer is doing the towing. However I'm going to call CS because I also ran it with a Ranger and Escape and they were both fine. I have a friend with a Ranger but it only has a Stage 1.
 
different drivetrain in the Mountaineer, and different rear suspension... Most places wont let an explorer rent ANYTHING to tow with...
 
This is killing me. Anyone with a tow vehicle in the Jersey area want to make some beer money?
 
Just say I get a tow dolly. What would it do to the Explorer if it towed a CRX less than 300 miles? Worse case scenario and best case scenario?

You wanna give me the $200+ that it would take to use one? I just can't justify to myself spending more to get a vehicle to my house then it actually cost to buy the vehicle.

Uhaul would be $233 before tax. That's for 2 days of use and 272 miles. And I would still have to find a friend to drive me the 4 hours up to CT. I also don't need it for 2 days, but that's the way they calculated it. I'm going to call UHaul tomm I guess. Who knows, at this point I could buy a Stage 2 hitch for my friend's Ranger, rent the tow dolly, and still save $.

But can someone answer my questions posted above still?

Why does Ford say the Explorer can tow up to 3500lbs. with its stage 2 hitch? Like I'm not making the connection right now.

Didn't mean to be an asshole. It's just when you rent a truck too they charge by the mile. That's why I would drive up to CT with a friend, then drive the Uhaul truck and trailer back(put less miles on the truck=less $$$).
 
Oh, I know some companys give a flat daily rate unlimited miles, at least they do up here. Might be worth checking into. Maybe the small rental companys have something like that.
