Probably going to get a laptop computer next week. I am thinking either Sony or Toshiba. Any suggestions or personal experience would greatly be appreciated.

Sony's are overpriced, but nice.

Toshiba is good quality, well priced, and nice too.

Either one is probably a good choice. Let your wallet do the decision making.

I've had lots of experiance with numerous laptops of both brands over the last few years. They both really are good, depending on what's in it.

acer aspire series are great machines!

i'm running an HP 6710b. love it.

What do you want to use it for? Just simple web surfing, e-mail reading etc? Or are you into graphic design, movie making/editing, pictures? Finding out what you want to use it for will help you narrow the field as far as what to buy. No point in getting a laptop with way high end graphics if all you are going to do is surf the intrawebz.

My buddy had a Toshiba Satellite....it was a COMPLETE piece of shit. I'd personally go with either Dell or Apple for laptops right now.

I got a 400 dollar Toshie that I am very happy with. It wasn't the hottest thing available, but for the features you got, the price tag is unbeatable. One thing that I was pleasantly surprised with was the fact that everything, and I mean everything, works with Linux straight outta the box. Battery life is decent, it's got dual HDD capacity, which might see use soon. IMHO, Toshies are decent little boxen.

damn every dell laptop i've encoutnered has some sort of hardware failure going on. CD rom dies, screen dies, hard drive dies, memory dies. POSs IMO

my buddy's got a toshiba satallite laptop he's been though hell and back with, it's been dropped, kicked, sat on, left in freezing temperatures, and it continues to work.

That's funny because my buddy's Satellite has had like 5 hardware failures so far. Maybe it was that specific model, because this other kid I knew who had one also had a shit ton of problems with it.

I love my HP pavillion dv8000 that I have had now for over a year. The burner went out but hp replaced it asap with a new one no questions asked. apparently there was a bad batch from the supplier. I think with warrenty it was 1100.00.

It really depends on what you want to play and at what resolution. That card would handle older games like Half-Life 2 and what not, but not the new ones like Crysis, COD4, etc... at good resolutions. Also, the speed seems a little on the low side, only 1.6ghz.

What about like medal of honor or need for speed or like games? Would it be better with a 2.2 ghz? Or is the graphics card holding me back?

Both, but mostly the graphics card. Its middle of the road in terms of laptop video cards.

Heres a MUCH better deal:
HP $500 off $1399+ Laptops: dv2700t 14" Core 2 T9300 2.5 Ghz, 1GB DDR2, 160GB HDD, DVDRW, WiFi N, Bluetooth, TV Tuner, Fingerprint Reader, Webcam, 12-Cell, Vista Premium $919 +More - SlickDeals.net Forums

You get a smoking hot 2.5ghz processor that is the new T9xxx where as the one you liked is first gen T5xxx. And its $350 cheaper than the one you were looking at. Dont worry if it comes with 1GB of RAM because laptop memory is cheap as dirt. You can upgrade to 2GB or 4GB for $30 or $70 respectively. Dont uprrade with their RAM. $80 for 1GB is a fucking rip. It comes with the same card, but that extra 900mhz will help everywhere, not just gaming.

If you want serious gaming, move to desktop or fork over a shit load.

The graphics card is lower grade on that one (128 vs 256 mb). Will the above mentioned games play on either computer?

the video card ram is moot at the resolution ur going to be running, especially with only 64-bit bandwidth.

and it depends on which version of need for speed.. carbon is a pretty bad port so unless u turn most of the settings down and run it in 800x600, then its going to be choppy. it should be able to do most wanted decently though.

anyway, for the money, the deal i linked to will definately beat the one from best buy because the core is 2 gens ahead.

but yeah, so in short, itll play the games u want, but at very limited resolutions/details because just the nature of the card.
