Whats up guys, im new to the whole Honda scene, but ive been in to motorsports for a while now. Ive done my fair share of screwing around the engine bay, so im not new to anything. I usually tinker around on Subarus, and Pontiacs.

My buddy just recently bought a 93 Civic hatch. I know the potential of the B18c swap and even the B16 swap. Basically, we are going with the B18c.

I know how to swap an engine, and i know how to wire (20 year old computer geek).

My question really is this:

What should I do with the 3500 dollars i have laying around? I obviously wanna swap it, and i have my mind set on a b18, but i saw a b20 on HMO and i want to know the upsides and downsides to either.

Basically my challege is that i have a clean slate (93 hatch) and 3500 bucks to throw away. What would you recommend?

do you want a fun daily driver with some pickup?? (b18c) .. or some haul ass?? ( b18b turbo)

What are your goals? Daily driver? Fast street car? Track only? What are your power goals?

my goals are a fun, peppy DD.

Something that can get out of its own way, lol.
I want something that is fast, peppy, and i want it to handle.

Anyways, i was thinking b18, but wanted some other options. i dont know if boost is an option as it is a DD and needs to be halfway reliable. I was looking at some B20's and H22s...what are your thoughts?

I guess to put it into perspective, i have a Grand Prix GTP (for those that dont know, 240hp/280tq) that ive heavily modified, and a 1994 Subaru Impreza AWD that is heavily heavily modified.

I want it to be quick, nimble, and naturally aspirated as those two up there^^ are FI.

The best bang for your buck is probably going to be an H22 swap. It's got some of the highest horsepower and torque numbers in stock form out of any of Honda's 4-cylinder engines. To make horse and torque numbers similar to your other cars on a B18 you're probably going to need to boost. It can be done N/A but boost will probably end up actually being cheaper and more reliable.

ok, h22 sounds feasible

How difficult are they to install in an EG hatch?

gotta bend some [important/strong] stuff, weld some stuff. rewire some stuff. it's one of the more difficult swaps. any B or D series would be way easier.

unless u just want to run lines, u need suspension work to compinsate for the extra weight up front w/ an H22 in a hatch

With the mount kits they have now it's pretty much a bolt-in aside from a little banging on the frame and some cutting to fit the transmission in. And as far as the weight issue goes, it's not really as bad as people make it out to be. If you're planning on building a well-balanced car then new shocks and springs should be on your list anyway.

Honsetly, 3500 to go N/A won't go a long way. Trust me I know look at my list of mods here thatguy4life’s Profile » HondaSpace.com - The Place for Honda Enthusiasts Online and all of that is currently being upgraded well the head is already done just waiting for the shop to let me know if I need new pistons or just rings. but the new list is:

Skunk2 pro 2 cams
Skunk2 pro series cam gears
Skunk2 pro series IM port matched to
Skunk2 pro series 68mm TB
Skunk2 pro series valves
Skunk2 pro series springs w/ titanium retainers
Skunk2 cam seal
Cometic head gasket
Hondata heatshield
and once the bottom ends done will be toped off w/
rage tri-y header
skunk2 mega r exhaust
and tuned via S300

P.S car and motor to the left

ideally for a fun peppy DD - a b16 in that hatch would have some pep and be fun - the GSR or type r incredibly fun but could end up with some traction problems...personally I would look for a properly built b20 vtec or ls vtec - plenty of power cheap definitely fun - not as rev happy but great toys.

well then...

What would you do with 3500 bucks and a clean hatch?

i'd say 'FUCK, that's not enough, i'm deffinatly going to have to save more'

because i'd like to get the swap (B16 $2,500), tein s-techs ($150), cat-back exhaust ($300), toda 8.8lb flywheel ($450), 2KS clutch ($450), intake ($100), misc install junk ($200), nice rims w/ lowpro's ($1000)

and that makes 5150... give or take. if you've got a stock clean hatch.

that's what i would do tho. after having done a swap already, and all those things, i think it woulda been better to have saved up and bought it all at one time. lol

Spend roughly $1000 of that(maybe less!) and do a homemade turbo setup on the stock D-series engine.

Also, for wheels some Rotas with tires can be had for around $400, and you can skip the Toda flywheel and spend around $150-$200 on a 7, 8 or 12lb flywheel(on the D-series, 12lb is recommended for street and drag though.).

yeah but really, when it gets that light, those are sometimes not streetable. the toda has the same idle characteristics of a stock flywheel with all the advantage of 8.8lbs of chromoly over aluminum BS. IMO. aluminum scratches

The friction surface is still steel. I have a 7lb Fidanza and it idles like stock too. Difference is driveability. The 8lb in my Accord felt just like stock.

H22 is a good choice for the money u got. An OBD1 H22 swap not gonna cost u more than 2K with everything included. well depends ( u can find it as cheap as 1500, or up to 2500) and then get a mount kit, and axles. and ur good to go. by the way check out ebay, they sell H22 swaps with mount kits and axles for ur civic. not to expensive.

really, first you need to change your name!! if you havent noticed, we are all ricers, and most of us have hondas and acuras that will put a real smack down on your subi or pontiac... now, with that out, you should go with the B16 swap, it is easy, reliable, and still a great platform to work with, if you decide to boost it later it will be easy, if you decide to do anything to it.. its jsut easy, there are So many parts for the B16 and it really is a fast choice!!! plus you can get one and still have some money left over... for a vtec controller ect.... and even though it will be quick.. it will still pass emisions and will still get good gas millage
