at first i thought it was my wireless connection fucking up again,
then i realized everywhere else worked.

bad b! lol.

apparently it locked up around 330 am, and i didn't get paged about it until 930am. i need to go yell at my host ping service monitor.... but then again, it would ping... it was apache that locked up (the web service) so the ping would come back clean.

hrm....

ideally, i need a 2nd webserver to run diagnostic tools on and service level pings and such, but i don't have one.... and its a LOT of money just for a monitoring program. A couple hours of downtime isn't worth 250 bucks a month IMO

NAgios...free...run it on a linux vm

youll love yourself...and if you need help, let me know. I have setup a full functioning Nagios install in under 4 hours for 20-30 servers...I just did another install at my current office.

What operating system is the board on? Apache for linux?

yeah, we're on centos 5

the problem with running a monitoring system is that running on the same server i have is pointless. if its down, its down, and that means th emonitoring prog will be down too.

lol

I'm an idiot I know...

Im talking about installing debian as a VM on your home computer. Nag is a package install in Debian and its pretty self explanitory. It wont need more than 128MB of memory and it wont use too much of the proc.

Just trying to give an option. You can also get a tiny ded from some companies (like $30 a month). Just run Nag on that.

my home machine isn't on all the time, and its a pain to start a vm everytime i have to reboot or something

I havn't played with enterprise level linux much since redhat went commercial. I've been using fedora for a while now. Still on core 7. I still havn't converted my windows 2003 server over to linux like I'd like to. I'm still debating on what flavor to run. I'm having problems deciding how I want to go about moving my 1TB NTFS raid 0 array over to linux and keeping relative permissions. I don't have the extra space laying around, and buying another TB isn't an option right now. And, I have yet to really check hardware support. It's a Tyan dual opteron board with silicon image raid controllers. Suggestions?

if my internet wasnt as unreliable as it is, i'd offer to host a monitoring program. but there'd be too many false alerts...

so do we have more programers here, or system admins? I'm gonna take a wild guess that B owns the server. Sometimes the server lags a bit. What hardware's it runnin if you don't mind me asking?

its not a pain. you just click on the shortcut to open it up then just start the VM. it literally takes less than 30 seconds.

took the words out of my fingertips.

and nag will send you text messages too (the main reason i call it nag). I just went through my phone. out of 160 message is the last 10 hours....6 were from people i know. the rest were from nag (realize that im paged on 80 servers and not just 1).
