Howdy folks!

just wondering where would be the best place to start modifying with the accord.

SOHC F20B, VTEC.

Do i start with lowering the suspension or would you go for engine mods first?
Theres a place not far from me that specialises in Jap motors, and said he can do loads with it, even turbo / supercharge it (but that'd be £3k, so i'll pass).

he's on about stuff like:
Oversize green air filter and re-location pipe
cold air ducting and heat shielding
4 into 1 heat wrapped manifold
2.5" exhaust system
Uprated cams
Uprated valve springs
Uprated con rod bolts
shim under lifters
vernier pulleys
head machined for high valve lift
head skim
extensive porting work
Megasquirt ECU

All that fitted, would cost me no more than £2,500. ($4,961)

Whats your opinions?

The head does not need to be machined for increased lift, nor does Honda use shims or even buckets(they use rockers).

He needs to be more specific on the parts he's throwing in there. Honestly, I don't think he knows much about Honda engines. Instead of installing upgraded rod bolts, it's best to just upgrade the rods altogether. I've seen a lot of F-series with busted rods.

I'd go for Bisi(located in California, USA though) for parts. He's pretty good with F series motors(his F22A is making +430whp, all motor!).

Whether the car should be lowered first, or engine modified, is up to you really.

the stuff in that list is from his website, its speaking in general for all cars, not just honda :)

4AGE engine (Corolla) fast road or race preparation and tuning up to 230bhp; AE 86 corolla performance parts, AE92 4AGE engine

either way, he's taken the details of the car and will list the more appropriate stuff in more details with accurate costs. either way, i can't do california as i live in england lol.. postage costs would be immense. but i can check a website out for him if you got a link?

start with engine mods. youll get so much power just after a cupole mods. i used to use the f20b untill the ringlands blew. but if anything i started with the head and cams first then i went to the headers and then the intake. we put on the suspension last becasue wats the point of haven a good suspension without power. and yes it will cost a WHOLE lot more than 2,500 for this motor the headwork alone for this motor was over 2500. good luck with the modding im just glad that finally somone else is usen the f20b.

i'm gald too, i was worried i was the only one. i head h22 this and d16 that etc... made me think i had a crap motor lol. probably do compared to the other ones tho :p haha

Uh...better handling, better looks perhaps??? I'd rather do suspension first. I hate seeing cars with swaps or built motors that still look like 4x4s on their stock suspension...

Anyways, to the OP: if all the stuff that you listed is going to cost you the equivalent of $5,000, I'd say skip it and find a different shop. It sounds like a ripoff to me. For 5 grand you should be able to assemble a pretty nice turbo kit and make more power than an N/A build will net you.

Got to love those 250whp Hondas with incredible wheel hop! Don't just do it for looks ;)

i'd have thought the engine would need to be prepared and uprated bits such as valves and springs, pistons etc would need to be done before turbo'ing?

the place that does all this could turbo or supercharge it for about £3k, $6k or less. the prices on the site are just to give you a general idea really.

Well obviously I'd advocate it for handling over looks. I was just responding to the other guy's statement of "what point is there in doing suspension before you build up your motor?"...

It depends on how much power you want to make. The F-series engines are generally pretty stout from the factory and can stand up to a decent amount of boost in stock form. Upgrading all the internals certainly wouldn't hurt, but it's not completely necessary. With just ARP studs and a block guard I'd feel perfectly safe boosting under 10 PSI on a healthy F20/F22 engine.

Also, keep in mind that a turbo build and a non-turbo build are done differently. If you plan on going turbo in the future, then you'd use different cams, different pistons, etc. then you would if you just plan to keep it naturally aspirated. This is why I suggested just turbo-ing the stock engine. You can probably make more power on a stock F20 turbo then you would with a built N/A F20.

I'm just trying to give you some options and information that you may not be aware of. It just sounds like this shop is trying to sell you every part they have, with little regard to what would actually make the most power for the least amount of money. Maybe not, maybe those prices are reasonable where you are, but that's what it seems like...
