UPDATE! attempt to steal my CRX

hey, guys. I would like to thank EVERYBODY for their support and input. The bad news - the thug is still on the loose. But if he dares to give my CRX another shot - he will get a very special welcome.

The good news - the thief is in no way related to the forum. (Further log analysis proved that no ip that came from the forum landed on the file with my address info). I am really happy to know it.

I have read lots of stuff on the security topic and will prolly go with a combination of:

1)steering wheel club (it saved me once) (quick release is too expensive)
2) pedal block (cant beat 30$)
3) couple of kill switches
4) alpine 150R alarm (nothing fancy but want a tilt/motion/hood sensors) - anybody knows a good installation place?
5) alpha lock for one wheel (or two?)

Sucks that i ll have to buy a new steering wheel (old mugen never went back to anything round ;-)) but it served its purpose - oem wheel would had been taken off more easily.. ) I think i ll go with "momo competition", less flashy.

Lojack/fancy gps viper is out of a student budget ;) I am thinking about gps cell phone to track the location.

Input and suggestions are priceless for me.

fellas, how is the criminal factor doing on this forum?

My car got broken into and the only reason it wasn't taken away last night was a really thick club on a really thick mugen steering wheel. Both are bent to shits but stayed on.

I've had it parked on the street for some time with no problems. Until i posted my location here along with a URL to the picture when i asked for tech advice. The url HAD also my resume file with Jersey address of my GF.

I trust that the majority here are honest folks who's help i appreciated, but it looks like some bottom-feeders are using forum info to locate modified cars and go after them.

The catch is that although i am a noob honda enthusiast, i am a forensic IT guy. The IPS that visited my site (on my server) where the picture was posted were logged, processed by me for geographical locations, matched with internet provider's database and going into the works to the cops. Forgot to mention the mini wireless camera above windshield - you were too busy with the wheel that forgot to say cheese, fucker? Report has been filed, scans are pending and i am going after the fucker to the full extent. (Those with Sunnyvale, CA ip addresses dont need to worry along with some others - too far).

I'll shell out for some security gear for the future and park at home instead of GF's, but i am a really pissed off camper now, a motivated one as well.

jeebus we're getting preyed upon here.

for the record i drive a POS '84 buick. and i live in queens.

I drive a Acura NSX and stay in a cheap ass mobile home with shitty locks.

come and get you some.

i'm not a fan of the 'it's our fault' approach. i'm more a fan of the 'let's kick their asses' one :D. but i hear what you're saying blanco. it's just that theives need to stop looking at 'us' like victims. that means we just have to get nasty. krueger blades in the driver's seat, ftw.

That's why you never, ever, ever, ever give out personal information on the internet. Hell, most of the people who know me in real life don't even know where I live.

Major +1.

Linking an online ID with your physical address is a bad move. Glad you are ok tho.

That's all kinds of fucked up, I'm sorry. I'd cry if my car was busted into. Who would do shit like that???
You're smart for the camera, I probably would've never thought of putting that there.
You get him!!!

a lot of people would do that shit.. most of the time they actually make away with the car though

yeah it happens.

you gotta be real careful about what you post and where you post it.

even a background of your house or work can give you away some times.

there's no good way to block/ban the theives, mostly because A) they probably aren't even members, and B) im not a judge.

good luck in tracking them down... it will be tough though

I wonder why nobody here as attributed this to coincidence. Didnt he say that he just started parkin it in the street?

That was one of my first thoughts, actually.

Most car thefts are not meticulously planned out.

Thieves probably were in the area, had seen the car a few times, and came back one night to try and get it.

If these thieves were part of a dedicated "car harvesting', internet browsing ring, then you would no longer be in possession of your vehicle. . . they would have put ur lil CRX on a flatbed and it would be gone.

they trailored mine.. :(

you had shared a lot of the work you'd done on your ride here, too... just sayin...there's merit to worrying about people casing your car online. the last few months, reading these theft posts have i guess finally opened my eyes to it. i know, i'm a lil slow ;).

some people like to be part of a community, others like to prey on communities. suck :(.

i'm almost 100% positive mine wasnt site related.. there is a group home next door and a guy that works there is in a car club known for import theft here.. i know he was in on it.. but i cant really do anything about it.. a few people in their club have been busted with motors, wheel and other shit at their houses..

The fact that he still has his car is proof that the people after it did not put a lot of thought into the crime. Had they been prowling the forms here looking for cars to steal, they would have trailered his car and it would be gone.
