I was just wondering if a set of low comp forged pistons into my d16y8 would support my goal of 200whp without any other internal mods. I was figuring 12psi from my turbo would do the the job. Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks
 
well, first off, you don't need to replace pistons in your sohc to get up to 200hp.

second, if you read about through the turbo threads, you will see that it isn't about the psi that will get you power, it's the size of a turbo.

a t66 with 12 psi is different than a t3/t4 with 12 psi.
 
PSI still does matter, the size just dictates where it'll happen and for how long. Just use a compressor map to select the right turbo.

ie: A big turbo pushing 12psi at 7000rpm will make the same power as a small turbo at 12psi at 7000rpm, the difference is the small turbo is probably make less before and after 7000rpm; thus the larger turbo having more power throughout the band. It's all about "useable" power.

ok well I have a garrett t3 how much more could I make with the pistons? I would like to beat an h22 prelude with no more than a 40 hp shot of nitrous. I want turbo my car anyways but this kid has really been pissing me off Paul walker style lately being that the kids car has more rice than your average box of rice a roni. Anyways I have an auto trnny so I' m trying to make up for the lost gear. So how much more hp can I safely make with just the pistons.

Vitara pistons and Eagle/Tunertoys conrods will make your engine capable of over 400 hp at the wheels. But it takes boost/nitrous to get there. You don't need any more than 200whp to beat a stock h22 heavy ass prelude I'll guarantee you any bone stock prelude isn't making 200 hp at the wheels. Not to mention it's heavier than a Civic.
 
well I'm not looking to beat just that prelude but the thing is nobody here will notch blocks and I am mechanically retarded compared to most so just pistons are my only option. So I'm still curious to see how much whp I can make. Plus there might a nitrous plan for myself down the road.
 
Wow Blanco I actually read that article. I'm just glad I somehow leaned toward that thought naturally. I thought "Well, that's how most things work you gotta get it used to what you want to put it through" like workin out, gotta push more weight harder then it gets easier. Which is what I did hahahaha I was gonna do the easy break-in til I thought about that then I warmed it up by test-driving in the school parking lot since that's where I did the swap then I just HAAAD to put that pedal the the floor 1-4 gear to see what it could do!

yeah I know I came off sounding really dumb but I love building my car just not as talented as you guys are and I'm building my car because I want to kinds just curious if in yhevprocess of it I could beat some guy I don't like. Didn't mean to sound like a hard a$$. But yeah what kind of tune are we talking about because nobody really tunes around here. Nobody will even notch a block for rods like I said earlier. LOL
 
What kind of tune? Like air/fuel ratios, etc. I'm not very educated on tuning myself but that's because I've got a while to go before I can even start because of money and especially time being 17 and in highschool about to start working fulltime and going to school (again...) for that money...so I still got tons of researching to do but hey it paid off after 5 months of researching which engine to swap, how to do it, etc.. and I'd never even worked on a car before I did that I just dove in. Luckily I had a friend who knew his way with wiring :D but I can do a D2D swap in probably 3 hours now I did almost everything else by myself. Point is...just research, research, research, and you'll see that it pays off and if there's anything you're unclear about that's when you ask questions and you'll get more than enough help.

Think you came off sounding dumb I was a complete total ricer before I came to this site. Just look at my username hahahaha.
 
A big turbo at 12psi will make more power at 7k than a smaller turbo will at 12psi because the smaller turbo isn't pushing the same volume, just the same pressure.

That depends on what a "small turbo" is ;) We could be talking GT35R vs. T70. Thing is, for a given volume/rpm, both turbo's would have to flow the same amount(assuming all plumbing is the same) to obtain 12psi at 7000rpm for a given motor. If you do the math associated with sizing a turbo, for the same engine the amount of air needed to increase the pressure to 12psi at a given rpm is the same. But, that's only at one point. My argument is a larger, high flowing turbo would be able to keep the higher boost level for a much wider range. In other words, a smaller turbo would be "peaky" for higher boost levels.

hey Blanco haven't you had this conversation about bigger turbos pushing more power because of the bigger compressor wheel before? I'm pretty sure you had that conversation with K2evin too?
