hey my friend is doing a swap putting a 94 b18c1 into a 97 ek dx hatch. and were he lives they do OBD emission test so what ecu he should get? and does he need a OBD1 to OBD2 connector?

1997 is OBD2, if the b18 is obd1 he needs an obd2 to obd1 converter and use the ecu that comes with the motor. Not a good idea to retrogress i would personally stick with ob2 much easier =) good luck

If he lives somewhere that does inspections than an OBD conversion is not going to fly. He's going to need to run the motor as OBD2, and probably use OBD2 accessories as well (intake manifold, O2 sensors, distributor, etc.).

Just wondering though, why do you say it's not a good idea to swap to an older OBD system? If he didn't have to worry about emissions, I'd say go with OBD1. It's simpler and much easier to tune.

Yah, agreed. OBDII is a PITA. If emissions was not an issue this would be great. Unfortunately, on top of the swap harness, you will have to install a host of new sensors in order to pass the emission. OBDII cars have cam position sensors (not sure about Honda but I believe they do) a second 02 sensor, and more. Sell the C1 and get the OBDII version.

Oh without a doubt OBD1 is simpler and easy to tune but with all these restrictions its a hassle to mess with obd1 in an obd2 car =/ my friend has it done in his crx and all he can really do it tip off the inspection guy a 100 bux. but obd1 is easier to tune.

so u saying that there is no way that he would pass emission with the 94 b18c1 on his 97 ek not even with a OBD2 to OBD1 connector? there must be a way. and has any one gone threw this problem or know someone that has and what they've done to pass emissions?

It depends on what form of emissions testing his state performs. I know in NH, we plug into the OBD2 port and just run a code scan. If it comes up clean then it passes emissions. If these are the same circumstances, it seems to me that it will be a bit difficult.

It depends on how thorough the inspections are. You'll probably want to look into it beforehand. Like UNDR8D said, if they just plug in a tool and scan for OBD2, you'll be ok. If they do thorough under-hood inspections, then it may not pass.
