I am curious to see what the debris field ends up looking like.
 
My best friend is a gunners mate on the USS Lake Erie. He's one of the guys that works on the Vertical Launch Systems of the ship.

He called me a couple weeks ago when they had just got to San Diego from Hawaii. I was supposed to go visit him in San Diego cause they were going to be there for a month or so. But he told me they were heading back out to sea the next day because they got new orders. A couple days after that the first articles came out in the news about the Navy shooting down the satellite and I instantly knew that was where he was going.
 
it took the bbc to say what i thought the networks should have been saying the whole time. it was just a test of a star wars program style missle. id say it succeeded...this time. i wanna see a few more tests on this.
 
The worries that these missiles are going to be used to take down other satellites is unfounded:

This satellite had to degrade it's orbit before we could hit it. It fell to half of it's height when we launched
The Chinese have developed a system SPECIFICALLY for taking out satellites, and demonstrated it. There was no international uproar.
That satellite's contents wasn't secret technology. We weren't worried about other governments getting it for it's technology. Not even it's fuel. .. And on that note,
The fuel on it wasn't that "toxic" nor dangerous. But, if this satellite was found, and it's launch was traced back to a banned launch (Think Perestroika) then we would be in big trouble.

And that is the crux of the problem.
 
we werent allowed to launch surveillance satellites in the 80s?

nm, i get what you were saying. it might have had a weapons payload on board.

Wow, I actually can say I agree 100% with Cel, and was actually going to mention this as well. Star was is not over. This missile could never actually reach a satellite in orbit.
