So I was reading Taco's thread and thought i'd post up my recent move up into a better job.
I've been working for a general contractor for about 6 months as a drafter. They did mostly outdoor stuff like patio covers, decks, concrete, etc. Pretty much all small stuff. I was getting paid crap money, $12/hour, and the owner was a shady asshole. I never really had many problems w/ him, but I saw how he treated his other employees, and didn't like it. He violated a lot of labor laws with the regular construction workers, and their dumbasses never would say anything about it. The only thing i ever really butted heads w/ him on was that I had worked a few hours overtime and was told by the bookkeeper that the owner would not pay overtime. I kept quiet for a while, knowing that the law was on my side on that issue and that I wanted to find another job first. The other thing was that when I interviewed they asked me if I could use my laptop temporarily until they got a new comp set up for me since I was the first drafter at the company. That was cool and all, but they always put it off and after 6 months,still no computer for me to work on
So on top of that stuff, business slowed down to the point that they were calling me in the evenings saying not to come in the next day because there were no projects. I started looking for other jobs, and after a few interviews, I landed a new drafter position at another gen. contractor.
This place is great. I'm not making much more, only $14/hour, but it's full time, guaranteed hours, and the homes that we do are f'ing huge. This company builds homes almost exclusively in Rancho Santa Fe, which is an area near San Diego that is one of the top richest zip code's in the nation. The smallest home that I have seen here so far is around 9,000 sq. ft. and they go all the way up to about 18,000 sq. ft. The prices range from around 8 mil to close to 20 million.
Right now we are doing a home for David Justice, the ex baseball player, and are trying to land a project w/ some ex football player, not sure of the first name, but his last name's Griffith. I think he played for the Vikings but not completely sure.
As for the old job, I didn't even give a notice, just went in and gave a resignation letter and explained that I couldn't afford to give a notice and waste a week or two there when I could start at the new job immediately. They were a little upset, but knew I had a damn good point and I did end up leaving on good terms.
