I just bought a b18a1 block at a junkyard.

My question is what head would be best for me? a b16 or a gsr? i plan on mabey turboing the engine later after i put the engine in. i hear a gsr is better for turbo. also if i were to bore it out to 2.0L and sleeve the block. what kind of pistons would i need and what else would I need to go along with the new block? and would it be fairly east to make 200+ hp with the lsvetc? Thank you!

well, if you wanted a 2.0 you would have been better off getting a B20 sleeved. as for the head, it depends on what you really want to do with your motor. if you are going turbo, a B16 head would create lesser compression than a GSR head, therefore you could run at a higher boost. if your going N/A, GSR or type R pistons with matching head would give you... literally a GSR or type R engine lol. food for thought too: B16=160bhp GSR=185bhp Type R=210bhp. let me know what you decide, I have an lsvtec in my EG, so I have plenty of advice to offer

you better rebuild the motor..its from a junkyard so you have no idea what the internals look like...
new bearings, gaskets and bolts would be your best bet

If you want to make 200whp on engine, you won't be boosting that engine in the future ;] ctr pistons, itr cams with mild head work and decent bolt-ons will get you 200whp tuned.

are you saying that if i were to make 200whp NA then there would be no need to turbo it? or jss if thats what im shooting for i wouldnt want that much power? bwt thanks a lot superwho05, and Blanco i was trying to start a thread so i could know what it is that I personaly need for my wants. If you know any good threads for me please post I want to read as much as I can

do could i make 250hp fairly easy with a gsr head, bored to 2.0 block? or better off turbo with with b16 head?

In order to make power naturally aspirated, you will need a lot of compression. High compression engines have a high tendency for detonating. Adding boost to that high compression would increase detonation tremendously. I have thought about building a high compression turbo setup, but it is simply just not worth it. Tuning it would be a nightmare, you would have to pull so much timing to keep it from detonating, and ontop of all of that, you will need to run higher than "pump" fuel. Just not worth it for a DD car.

the b16 head and the gsr head are basically the same except the combustion chamber is smaller in the gsr head, they both work great. if all you want to do is make 250 hp, put b16a pistons on the ls rods and run a gsr head, with the right tuning youll make 250 easily n/a.
if you want 300-800 some day youd be better off to go with a turbo set up. in which case you wanna run the b16 head because it will work better for turbo because it will lower compression.

Your all motor theory is far from correct. The NA setup you described would net maybe 170whp with a prayer from god. 250whp na costs big bucks. Your talking more displacement, more stroke, higher compression, high lift high duration cams, itb's and a lot of head work + tuning. As for the gsr head being the same as the b16a your also wrong. B16a heads are of a different casting. They flow better for one. The gsr head has smaller combustion chambers and will yield a slightly higher compression ratio. You can rebuild the engine to oem specifications, or build it to be stronger. Just swap pistons/rods and new bearings and rod bolts, gaskets and seals. Leave the head stock. Boost it and make 300+whp on a moderately low amount of boost depending on the turbo size and quality.

Hurraaaay, thanks to everybody who has helped me out, Im going with...

My b18a1 block, bore to 2.0L
B16 head (wait to find it at a junkyard so I can get it for $140)
Eagle connecting rods
Golden eagle sleeves
JE low compression pistons or ARIAS?

My plan is to buy a little at a time but keep the money for the head..this way once I find the head I can go ahead and just slap it on and drop it in!

As of now I am tryin to find witch eagle connecting rods to get...witch fin one?

what

and could I just get um off ebay here?

eBay Motors: Eagle Connecting Rods ALL Honda B16 B18 B20 H22 K20 (item 350034232122 end time Mar-17-08 22:48:56 PDT)

I really feel that you are going into this not having a clue what you are doing... you seriously need to take a second and think about what you are getting in to... first of all you got your block from the junkyard... that could mean that block has been pooped in and peed in.. you have no idea.. you think that all your gunna have to do is get the head, put the pistons in and probably re use the head gasket and the timinng belt and water pump off of the pooped in ls... and then use the head from the junk yard that someone probably used to spit there sunflower seeds in.. basically what im saying.. you are gunna need waaaaayyyy more stuff then just a block and a head. thats the end of my story.

i already explained the junkyard motor to him..he just totally skipped my post though...junkyard motors sit out,in the weather, and where animals can get to them, rebuild the damn thing

yeah he is just thinking its soo easy to just get a block and get a head and stick them together and your done.. which is absolutely wrong.. he should disassemble the whole block and clean it out and then reassemble it using all new gaskets and such... its alot more money then he thinks..

u prully shouldnt be pooping in a block or spitting sunflower seeds inside the head.....isnt safe bub, its not made for that...everything else in your post was to stupid to comment on.

The day I see an animal taking a crap on a b18 short block is the day I become an animal killer. ;x

okay if the point that i was making was stupid then go ahead and dont listen to anything i said.. you really dont understand.. i guess i will have to read your post that you make in a few months that says my engine blew up and i have no idea what happened.. so.. have fun man.. i really hope this is a learning experience for you!

Dude, he's telling you that you have no idea what the actual condition of the engine is and that it's a good idea to do a complete rebuild because of that. Don't just look at the words, see their meaning.

exactly.. i mean... it was meant to be funny... but its also what you NEED to do.. never ever say slap a head on it.. that shouldnt even be a phrase ever used in a car forum.. completley rebuild the bottom end and when you get the head make sure you put all new seals in... if you really dont have a clue of what to do.. im sure you can go to a local machine shop with your block and tell them exactly what you need.. hand them the pistons and rods and water pump, timing belt oilpump(all brand new from HONDA exept maybe pistons and rods) and say i dont really no how to do this can you put these on for me after you hot tank it and make sure everything is in tact. they will probably say sure but def not for free.. im really trying to help you out.. you just have to see past the humor

o and by the way.. ive seen this floating around here.. i think its the best words ive ever read.. this one was copied from injen78's sig i hope he doesnt mind.

GOOD FAST CHEAP,
