Ok so the local TV/Furniture store is offering a deal where you get a "free" tv with the purchase of some furniture. We are moving into a house on Friday and are spending some of our wedding money on a new bedroom set, Mattresses, TV stand and possibly a dinning room table. We have the terms satisfied to get the tv I just need to choose which one. The tv would go in our family room which is decently lit by windows on either end of the room. It would be used for watching Direct TV and regular DVD's as we don't have a high def player or BluRay.

Here are the specs

I know the pros and cons of each but I still can't make up my mind. On the one had I get a projection screen where I have to replace the bulb every 3-5 years and on the other I get a plasma where I have to replace it 7-10 years down the road due to the half life of the screen. I don't want to wall mount so that will not be an issue.

Please don't post any you should get X brand for X dollars. We already have the furniture - the TV is an added bonus that we get. I just would like to know which of the two is the better tv to get.

get whichever you can sell for more. then get a tv that you really want.

youre gonna have to go in and look.

i hear a lot of people tout samsung, and when i went into best buy the other day, a sony (mid level) appealed a lot more than an upper level samsung. It all comes down to "which of these will i be able to look at longer...and be happier doing"

you also need to consider seating placement and angles of viewing. they are two very different tvs. i have heard that you are suggested to sit 2.5 times the size of the tv. so a 50" you would sit 125 inches or roughly 10 feet away for good viewing.

Samsung is not an option. Of the two they were both awesome compared to what we have now. Like I said I am looking for which of these two options I should get. I know for a fact that if I was purchasing with my own cash I would get the Samsung models because the do look really good.

The plasma has the glass front, so if you have a bunch of windows in your living room, you may get a glare off the screen...LCD's and projections don't face that problem as much...

well, this was what i was leading in to. i was going to suggest a samsung. you like samsung, just use this to pay for like 80% of it. just my .02

i wasnt saying you should buy a samsung. i was using it as an example. People told me to buy a samsung and i thought it sucked when i saw it.

go in and LOOK at the TVs and make your decision from there.

We were there last night and I definately think that they are adequate enough for the wife and I espicially since we are getting it as a bonus. I hadn't planned on going HD until at least the end of the summer after I had some cash from my summer job. Now with the furniture and the TV I and put that money towards other things like the basement or other home inprovements.

the mitsu is kinda lame...

What is the optical used for? I thought everything was done through the HDMI slots? Also like I said this is not going to be the center piece of a home theater or anything it is going to live in my family room. By the time I actually get around to finishing the basement I will have a better selection to choose from. Hopefully that 150" plasma will have dropped a little in price.

hdmi is IN. there's no hdmi OUT. if you want to run from your tv to a receiver, your computer, whatever, you need a digital audio out. the option they give you there is for digital coax, which is pretty much deprecated, like HDMI over-rode DVI

no optical out is not a bad loss on a free tv. since the hitachi is only 1080i id go with the mitsu....based on tech specs...still dont know how they actually look.

Yeah that is what I was thinking. The fact that the bulbs need to be replaced doesn't exactly make me happy. From what I hear they are 200-300.00 ish to replace.

the lcd is far and away superior to the dlp (except in price). and if im gonna go Rear Projection, i like the sony better.
