what, if any are solutions for squeaky belts? im hoping its nothing bad and easy to fix. its so annoying.

yeah use the tensioner bolts to either tighten or losen them, depending on what they need. i'd go get a haynes or chilton manual from your local auto parts store. it tells you how to do this and many other simple maintence tasks. :)

maybe some STP belt dressing if they look to be dry. helps them last longer.
 
really? brake cleaner evaporates fast. heptane and toluene. isnt that going to dry them out further? never heard of this being done
 
We've always used a silicone type spray that seems to help get rid of the squeakyness :shrug2:
 
yeah brake cleaner works and is the fastest more convenient way if you dont have wd40.....
 
the belts seem fine. no cracks and seem tight. so..spraying wd-40 on the elts as it runs will help stop the squeaking? i live in phoenix az, and the temp is already warming up. that might have been a factor.
 
Wow you guys are seriously on drugs. In no way do you ever lubricate a drive belt. Especially the timing belt. If it is making noise adjust the tension accordingly. If that does not correct the issue, replace the belt and tensioner.
 
There are products made to put oil and moisture back in your belt and prolong the life, like STP Belt Dressing. LS_VTEC, you sayin no to that too? I'm talkin acessory belts, of course not a timing belt!

WD-40 and brake cleaner i still think would hurt.
 
Any oily lubricant will cause a belt to "slip". Have you ever taken any ASE tests? They have questions on the engine performance test about lubricating drive belts. It is a "no-no".
 
no i've never taken ASE tests. i've taken MCSE tests. i'm not a mechanic. i build computers for a living :p

damn i really thought the stp stuff would help prevent against dryrot so quick in our horrible environment in the northwest. myth eh? it did seem to help some in my mom's odyssey and a few of my friend's cars.
 
Thats good. Try reading the service manuals on those cars. If you read closely, applying a lubricant to the belts will void out your factory warranty. ;]

i like to learn, but it's hard to imagine an oil you apply to prevent against dryrot on rubber, much like interior wipes that keep leather from drying out and cracking, are not good.

i'm not talking about bringing a bad belt back from the dead. just putting it on with each oil change as preventative maintence. i dont do that with my B16, but this has got me thinking about the subject more.

i shreded an alternator belt racing one night. i have no idea how that happened. was a new belt tensioned by the book. wasnt using belt dressing on those. but ya...

I was taught, from the "book" so to speak. It is not recommended to use belt lubricants, even IF STP makes one and says it is "good" for your belt life.

As for your belt getting shredded while you were racing, something may have gotten caught up onto the belt. Happened to me with an a/c belt one time. Some small wires came loose and ended up on the belt and those small wires started cutting into the belt.
 
I have an underdrive ... lemme rephrase that.

MY old ED Civic had an underdrive pulley that was polished. Well, Polished pulleys are fuckin stupid, and I had to downsize - I treated my belt with each install.

the belt treatment is for a specific reason, not a repair. But it's ok to use if you need it.
 
gawd dam im confused. :-/ i took a look at the repair book i picked up at checkers. where is this tensioner located? is it by the driver side wheel? what size is the bolt? ill try tightening the belt first.
