thats just staright up dumb!!
the consequence for everything nowadays is prison...and the penalties are def. not in line...
murderer gets 20 years
drug dealer gets 40
thiefs get life

they need to get shit in order and stop putting everyone in for dumb shit...
you miss out on court..go to jail..you get 2 years

When I was just in jail, I went to the halfway house/program things since the jail was so full and my crime was on the light side. So I go and there are at least 15 murderers on the program awaiting release on parole within the next 3-4 months after doing less then 5 years, yet they gave one of my friends a 5 to 7 for 6 bags of dope without the chance of parole, but they're letting the murderers go, I feel extra safe in NJ.

we have too many civil rights. we need to be like some of the other countries and just execture more people. everybody here thinks, "execute, omg!!!". everywhere else they eliminate the bad seeds. i'm seeing a problem here.

reforming prision in a nutshell:
the first time you go to prison a condition of release is completing train (be it an associates degree or a technicial cert). Now when inmates get out there is no excuse for not getting a job or reverting back to crime. Second time in prision, chain gang. The infrastructure of this country is old and falling apart. Plenty of roads need fixing, bridges need to be repaired and ditches for utillities need to be dug. If you can't pull your own weight in this county by yourself, then the prision sysetem should make you.

You have a fundamental flaw in your plan. In part one you assume that employers will hire a convicted felon soley based on the fact that they have training. My wife's dad did two years for a white collar crime that I am convinced that he did not commit the way they protrayed. He had a hard as hell time finding any sort of work that paid a decent wage and his crime was NON-VIOLENT. There is a huge stigma out there against people with a conviction on their record.

thats why I said tech cert. You could still be a heavy desiel mech, an A+ tech, equipment opperator, carpenter.... hell there's a ton of things to do.

Not as easy as you think. I'm a convicted felon and I'm having a hell of a time finding a job. Dunkin Donuts didn't even want to hire me.

Answer this: If you were a manager would you hire a convict over someone without a record? Its ok you can be honest with yourself. I would be willing to bet no matter how much you deny it the deep down answer is no.

In a perfect world yes. But reality is anything but perfect. Hell from what I understand a majority of the people coming out of lock-up can't even enlist. I couldn't think of a better place for some of these people to go and straighten out if they wanted to and get trained. I am not suggesting that enlisting is a great idea for every convicted felon but christ it could be an option. My wifes dad couldn't even land a laborer job at a packaging warehouse because of the fact he was a felon. Finally a couple of buddies pulled some strings and got him two differnt jobs because they personally vouched for them to the owners. Her dad has been told that he has been a great/model employee. Just think they would have missed out if they would have soley looked at his paperwork. Finding a good employee is hard to do these days.

Problem is, as far as my standpoint (Watch "Prison Nation") - there are too many people arrested each year for marijuana violations, and second offenses for minor things, i.e. drug charges for pot, alcohol violations, etc. Additionally, with no death penalty and stupid plea laws, major criminals (murderers, rapists) are staying in the prison system serving consecutive life sentences, or life. On top of that, lawmakers are quick to adopt new laws for drug violations and the like - but almost never pass laws for rehabilitation and job placement of minor offenders.

i think the 3-strikes law isn't helping either. i read somewhere that a guy got life in prison for stealing a slice of pizza. regardless of whether or not the story is true, the fact is, we are putting a more sever penalty on trivial issues. we either need to weed out the bad seeds or change our legal system. neither will ever happen in our lifetime though.
