ok so i have a buddy who is thinking about going with a DYI ITB set up on his turbo'd d16z6... what do you guys say good idea or bad

I was wondering the same thing. Is it not common because of the money it would take?

Maybe it's not common because of how the air is recirculated in a turbocharged engine. I think you'd have to have some custom piping done, one from the intercooler to each individual throttle body.

Tuning would probably give you a headache from hell too.

idk ive read up on it alittle bit and it seems that alot of ppl are against it because you still have to route the ITB's to a plenumto push out the boost evenly the only real gains that you would see are throttle response.

now if there was some way to devide your charge pipe into 4 evenly with out a plenum then im sure you would see great gains but idk how that would be possible

plus im sure tunning would be a bitch on that

i was thinking about a completly crazy setup that i have never seen before which would be to take an intercooler and weld on 4 outlets one for each throttle body but to fit al that piping would be a straight bitch

Wouldn't be too hard to fit it at all as long as you take measurements and have the piping made for you at a shop.

I would think the worst thing about a setup like this would be the tuning.

what would be wrong with havin a plenum dump into the tb's? That would give you the oppertunity to tune the airflow with different sized plenums, maybe even make a pretty good jump in power. correct me if im wrong.

yeah around here you would have to be able to do real time tunning to a tee because of climate changes all the fucking time.

i was also thinking about having custom intercoolers made to be about the same length as a dsm side mount but not as wide or think ran on each intercooler pipe with eather meth or kryo spray on each but thats kinda far fetched.

i have thought about the idea for quite some time now because i have some extra mani's laying around just asking to be hacked up lol and just start matching things up and seeing how things go... but one thing that i did like about one ITB set up that i saw was dual injectors and i thought that was real cool not really needed unless your throwing down some crazy ponies but still cool..

another thing that i have thought about doing is insted of doing 4 throttle bodys why not try 2 it would be easier to try to run on a boosted setup dont you think

its the fact that its like you still have your stock intake mani just with 4 smaller butterflys in the runners insted of having one big one

but i still say that it would have to give at least 15 - 25% power gain because im seeing like anywere between 35 - 50% hp gain with ITB's

you also look at vaccum issues with homemade ITB's at least thats what im reading along with MAP, TPS, and IAVC

Ooo, good info. I didnt think of the various sensors needin a vacum source. even though rite now it seems like a lot of work, im still very curious about it. fact is i have some parts for a turbo setup and im pickin up an itb set tommorow. im definitely gunna play around with different options before i put my project motor in my car.

well all thats really left to do is to get to work. i just got off the horn with a few buddies about the machining part and welding part of the setup and they say itll be cake all i have to do is get another buddy of mine to draw it all up on CAD and then send the layouts to my buddy at the machine shop and have him make the flanges vaccum log or mani and then something to evenly divide the boost.

if i go threw with it alll ill have to do a write up for every one and hell imight even start sellling it as a DIY kit i got enough parts for about 3 or 4 kits.

also keep me posted with pics and info on what you got going on and ill do the same as soon as i get the drawings back

Sounds good. And if you need CAD files lemme know. I work at a machine shop that makes ground support equipment for various airlines. I plan jobs (includes drawing parts in AUTO CAD), Im a machinist, and I can weld, so if you need help with design ideas or anything like that I'ld be happy to help. Good luck with it all.

Terrible Windows paint picture of my idea. ITB's but surrounded in the charge pipe. The same concept/look as a regular intake setup but with the throttle bodies in the runners. Not saying this would be easy but it could be done.:D

I would say run the two throttle bodys, it would be much easier to run piping and tuning would probably be way easier as well. Personally I think that would be the best way to go with a itb setup

It's been done, and is actually quite common. Skylines, and probably some other cars, are boosted and have ITB stock.

Just build a manifold/seal airbox for it. Otherwise, plumb it like any regular single-throttle setup. Running a MAP sensor is fine, as boosted motors don't suffer from vacuum fluctuation at higher throttle angles(just mount the MAP to the plenum). The manifold also reductions the fluctuation associated with ITB's.

i was thinking about the 2 throttle body idea but im stuck with what size throttle body to use. and then just run with to charge pipes out of the intercooler

The older M5 motors were ITB's with a plenum. They turbo those and leave the ITB's and make excellent power. Definately possible!

That windows paint picture is the same idea i had. Im startin on the plenum next week, goin to get my TB set today!
