I see some oil on the transmission every time I pop the hood.. I suspect its leaking from somewhere else and onto the transmission but.. My cousin said he thinks I need a new head gasket. Sound about right? How else can I assess this?

could be head gasket. put soapy water around whereever you think the leak is coming from and turn the motor over. if it bubbles then you are leaking from there.

I used to always get COOLANT on my tranny when I was leaking it from the lower radiator hose and a couple other lines. Is it green? If it's green it's antifreeze and you need to fix a simple leak.

If you think it's the head gasket, do a compression test.

Nah its black.. like oil. I don't think its coolant. But any other suggestions.. I'll try the water and soap.. anything in particular I should stay away from? Don't wanna get the wrong thing wet y'know

you'll be fine as long as you don't dump water in your intake or your dizzy. also, be sure the motor is cool, don't burn yourself

i thought u were callin me a fag.. but yeah Ive been told to wipe to the grease thats already there and try to take a look at where its coming from.. because every time I pop the hood the oil seems to be moist

EDIT:
FUCK! I think i know where its coming from now that I think about it.. because I was checking th oil like last week and it seemed like it was due for a change but there was at least SOMETHING to see that. Today I checked again.. and I didn't see a damn thing on the dipstick.. it was BONE dry.. And I just ordered a Alternator because my car died while I was on the road.. now that i think about it, might be cuz I didn't have any oil. Car wont start.

Maybe valve cover gasket.. no response :'(

???

It could be the valve cover gasket, but I kind of doubt it. Usually if the valve cover isn't sealed properly you'll get streaks of oil blown up onto the underside of the hood.

Try tracking upward to see if you can make out where the oil leak has started. Depending on where you see oil on the transaxle, it could be due to a damaged rear main seal. But most of the time you will notice the difference in your clutch activity in this situation. Check the vtec solenoid and distributor and valve cover for leaks. If still nothing, use some type of de-greaser and clean the block and surrounding area's off when the engine is cold. Than drive it for a day or so and look for leaks again.

The smallest seal can cause a serious leak mainly if there is sufficient pressure behind it. Good luck.

yup check the vtec solenoid. I was having the same leakage onto the trans and it ended up being the solenoid gasket.

Whatever it is.. I highly doubt its that bad. I probably don't lose more than like a teaspoon of oil a day. Right now I'm just tryna get the car started. I'll worry about the leak afterwards.

It was just worrying me because I didn't wanna have the leak then the alternator problem and not no where to start. But I'll be sure to put some oil in the engine after I install alternator.

Thanks for all the suggestions and help.. I phuckin love this forum!

Just took a closer look today. It was more obvious than I thought. It's the head gasket. All I did was wipe the transmission and the block and it was pretty clear where it was coming from. I was really hoping it wasn't that.. but now I guess that's on the to-do list along with my alternator and left axel.

I hear these things are pretty common with b-series engines.. I'll add oil in the meantime and change it when I have the money to just get a greddy head gasket and call it a day.

Thanks again everyone

i've never seen a headgasket leak oil.. i'm betting its the distributor o-ring or vtec solenoid gasket

if your car won't start and you are checking the oil then it'll always show pretty dang low or empty depending on how low you actually are. You are supposed to check the oil with the engine ran for a few minutes at least.

if you obviously are leaking oil then i don't argue with you about that. but maybe get the alternator on, turn it on for a few minutes and check again. I made a grave mistake with my 1st car(parents' car) years back and thought it was empty and dumped a whole 3 quarts more into it and actually MADE it start leaking

No the starting problem I've already figured out.. It's the alternator. I would say the oil if the car wouldn't start and then I realized the oil was that low, but that wasn't the case. The car died while I was driving. But I will def keep that in mind. I was going to get the alternator in before I put in the oil anyways. Thanks for letting me know.
