Hello people of Hondaswap..Long time no see.. Recently i've been thinking of swapping a k20a in my Ek9 civic type r...Well...according to wiki :

2007- Honda Civic Type-R (FD2)
Displacement: 1998 cc
Compression: 11.7:1
Power: 222 bhp (225 PS, 165 kW) @ 8000 rpm
Torque: 159 ft·lbf (215 N·m) @ 6100 rpm
Redline: 8400 rpm

2001-2005 Honda Civic Type-R (EP3)
Displacement: 1998 cc
Compression: 11.5:1
Power: 212 bhp (215 PS, 158 kW) @ 8000 rpm
Torque: 149 ft·lbf (202 N·m) @ 7000 rpm
Redline: 8400 rpm

2001-2007 Honda Integra Type-R (DC5)
Displacement: 1998 cc
Compression: 11.5:1
Power: 217 bhp (220 PS, 162 kW) @ 8000 rpm
Torque: 152 ft·lbf (206 N·m) @ 7000 rpm
Redline: 8500 rpm
VTEC Engagement: 5600rpm

The question is...If i want. for example, to make sure that i have swapped in my EK9 the K20 that belongs to a DC5 integra(which apparently has more power and torque) and not to an EP3 civic...How can i recognise it? some special characteristics on the engine's appearance? Since they have the same engine code do they also look the same?

And what about the FD2 engine? It's the same shape as the others right? Can it be put in a EK9?

That's all for the moment...Thank you in advance...

If you're looking at JDM motors, then I'm not really sure how you would tell the difference. All of them will be labeled K20A, regardless of differences internally. For those, you're probably just going to have to go off of what the seller is telling you, so make sure you buy from a reputable place. I'd recommend Specializing in JDM-USDM Engines & Parts...hmotorsonline.com

If you go with a USDM motor however, then you can tell the difference by looking at the engine codes. The K20A2 (RSX Type-S) or K20Z (07+ Civic Si) are what you want. Those engines make 200 horse. Avoid the K20A3, which comes in the 02-05 Civic Si and the base RSX. It only makes 160 horse.

And what the hell is an "FD2 engine"? I've never heard of it...

I'm looking for JDM engines...Because in my country that's the easiest to get. Personally i wouldn't trust our local seller that's why i needed some knowledge out of this forum before i go on with it. Sorry, when i said FD2 engine i was talking about the 2007 JDM Honda Civic Type R (FD2)which is as well equipped with a K20A. So looks like it wasn't only me? The three aforementioned JDM K20A's are all the same in appearance? No way to recognise which is one is which?

Ah ok, yeah I realized a while after I posted that you might have been talking about a chassis code when you said "FD2". My bad on that. And yeah, I'm not aware of any way to tell the motors apart personally, sorry man.

Anybody else? Bump for a good question...

As far as I know, the seller would just have to know (and be honest) about if in fact the motor and trans actually came out of a type r. other than that i dont know. The only thing I could guess at is being able to get a compression reading off the motor before you buy it. Doing so might be unlikely

Maybe I'm missing something here, but the differences between the ep3 and the dc5 seem like it's all ECU.

What are the head-codes for each engine? That'd be a good clue to where it came from.

No, there are actual differences in the engines themselves.

The DC5's VTEC mechanism is considered the high-performance version of i-VTEC. It's more like that of a B16 or GS-R. Both the intake and exhaust have 3 cam lobes per cylinder, plus, the valvetrain has roller rockers and continuously variable intake cam timing.

The EP3's (and also Accord, CR-V, Element, etc.) VTEC mechanism is more like the older VTEC-E, where you've only got two lobes on the intake cam (one big and one small) and no VTEC at all on the exhaust cam.

I'm not sure on the head codes...
