I would look for a used Garrett ball bearing turbo.. or something similar. Just my .02. As for piecing together a turbo kit verses buying a premade kit, piecing on together allows you to get exactly what you want. And can be a lot cheaper, if you find some good deals.

no offense man but do me a favor slap yourself in the forehead, okay now that we have done that think about it this way....do you have pistons and rods in your motor now. If you answered no to this question don't ever touch a car again....anyways....moving on....putting new pistons and rods, in your car will never well let me rephrase that almost never hurt your engine like a 99% chance it won't. And yes you should break these in without the turbo. But if you are going to buy the pistons and rods, you might as well buy the head gasket, and head studs and install everything at once. Follow the break in procedure, and then throw the turbo on after that is done. but seriously Blanco is right...you need to search for things.

I recently had a d16y8 set up in my 98 Civic ex and I was putting down right around 300hp and drove it daily. I mean the whole thing was completely overhauled inside and out, along with an AEM standalone and t3/t4 gt28 turbo setup on 14psi and it was a damn beast. The antilag was the real kicker for me. Loved it. Quick off the jump and plenty of power to basically run against what I wanted (around where I live at least lol)
I'm planning on building another one exactly the same except for having a drastic hp increase this time for it so I can try for right around 460 to 475hp. I mean I've seen one of my friends push his same model to over 550hp on 25 psi boosted set up. Alot more money but damn what a beast it was

Nah man it isn't that expensive of a build. Well I say that. You're right partially I mean my AEM ecu is right around 1500 bucks by itself. And I mean yeah if everything is brand spanking new and you buy COMPLETE top price parts for the complete overhaul then yeah it'll be in the high few grand area
I built mine for right around 3000 getting SOME semi used parts and not best of the best I could buy.
It was beast af. But I mean sure if you want to top notch it you'll spend thousands getting it over 350. But I must say that power in a stripped down 98 ek was fast as hell and wasn't many around to touch it

and you could buy a used usdm gsr swap for much less and same turbo make over 400 wheel
