thats awesome. but why do people put STi motors in bugs? wouldn't it be easier or make more sense to put a vw or audi motor and drivetrain in them? there are tons of all wheel drive audis.

The Bugs arent 4wd, theyre a RR car. The way the older Bug motor and trans setup is is very close to the Subaru motors. Its a pancake motor, (horizontily opposed four). I am way too tired to try to explain this. But its not un-common, most you see are in sandrails, this being the first Ive seen in a full-body street Bug.

I know the stock bugs are rear wheel drive. but I would think the whole point of swapping an STi motor into a bug would be to attain the added bonus of all wheel drive.

The motor doesn't have anything to do with if its rwd, or awd. Its in the transmission or transfer case. Like someone said they use the engine because its similar in design to the original vw motor.
