Too much VTEC?

My car came with 3 ecu chips, stock b16, a 5800 chip and a 4400 chip. Both chips control which rpm vtec activates and ramps up the fuel. I have been running the 5800 since ive owned it. Today after a valve cover and spark plug change i decided to brave the 4400.

I can now spin the tires in first gear ( while driving even from a roll) and i have a noticeable power gain and two tone vtec lol, which feels and sounds weird but soo cool.

I mean im in vtec for almost 5000 rpm. Is this harmful to the engine or anything else to be in vtec that long or that much?

it could be, if you lower the vtec to much you will lose power, the only way to know is dyno tune it.

Your redline (stock engine), is 8200 rpm. Having it come in so low isnt the factory crossover point, 5500 rpm is. If it feels better than so be it I guess. With vtec coming in at 4400 rpm, you have a vtec band of 3800. Vtec engines usually have a power band of 3,000 rpm (stock cams). My guess would be that your losing power upstairs.

I can hear my d15b vtec cross over at 4500 rpm unless my tach is way off, but it also hits rev limiter right at 7200.

my boys ls/vtec hit at 4500,but i think hes running chipped p28-its got pretty good power all the way from 4500-7200(that being the highest rpm hes hit w/ me in the car)

but a stock b16 is 5800

Mine is stock (obd0 b16) and at like 4400 or 4500

Im still looking for some input, it seems i do have a power gain tho from what i can feel, the fuel is definatley ramped up more too. VTEC merges really smoothly into the rpm at 4400 and when it hits close to 5800 it gets louder and more powerful like i expected. Now i dont think im losing high end hp but maybe some high end torque? First gear is much more potent which is where i have the least get up, it seems torque is up in first?

Again does this hurt the car?

again it can you need to dyno tune it. theres no way of knowing without doing that

Stock JDM B16 (P30) VTEC crossover is 4807rpm
Stock USDM B16 (P30) VTEC crossover is 4807rpm

according to Hondata's default stock map profiles.

most deffinatly. vtec should be smooth. exactly like he said. and if you have it set too low, it feels like it looses power for a bit before picking up.

butt dyno = horrible.

lol, when i first drove my buddies eclipse gs-t i coulda swore it was slower than my B16 coupe. well it was deffinatly faster, but just flooring his car with no comparison totally felt slower. trust the numbers! do testing like a scientist.

I did go by my ass dyno, it does feel like more power in first and second but after it feels sluggish. Your right i do need a dyno to prove it and im not saying i DID get an increase, but it did changed the torque curve so who knows. I should get a hold of the guy who programmed the chips and see exactly what its changing.

However i did change the chip back to the 5800.

Still could the 4400 cause harm?

Ok well ill pop in the stock chip and see what happens, then find a dyno around here to see whats really going on.

I would still like to dyno it regardless, im still in the process of getting a better job and settling into my new apt before i start adding on much else....

Ya i will definatley look into it, i was always curious to know.

I put the stock chip in and vtec hits at 5500-5800 and not 4800, then again i have a b16a sir2 which is obd1 so it might be different.

lol fine i will, you know blanco you may be all wise and knowing but you can be a little gloomy sometimes

make sure you know exactly what your getting into before you actually do. then things wont be so gloomy :)
