So I am getting my permit, already submitted and in process...Here are a few guns i like, granted I have never shot them before..

Kimber Custom II Stainless Steel.45
Magnum Research Baby Desert Eagle Stainless Steel .45
Smith and Wesson SW1911 Tactical Stainless Steel .45
Colt 1911 .45 Stainless Steel

Any ideas or suggestions?

I don't like the Glocks or Berettas

I see you want to go with a .45? What is your price range? If price isn't an issue go with the Colt. I would argue against the baby eagle. I have good experience with 1911's and hand guns in general and the baby eagle was a "baby boat anchor". Heavy and not as solid feeling or as neutral of a gun as the others.

In Order:

1.) Colt
2.) Kimber
3.) S&W

Also, check out Springfield Armory 1911's - their "Operator" is beautiful and feels great in the hands!

you really should go and shoot them before plunking down the cash for them
nothing worse than spending good money on a gun only to find out you cant stand shooting it

1911s are pretty standard... so you dont have to shoot every kind of 1911 out there... the slight differenced between them wont be so much of a deal breaker and will be easy to tell once you have fired a few 1911s of pretty much any other type
trigger break
ergos
finish
etc

the baby eagle you are going to have a hard time finding at a range for rental
so if you know someone with one see if you can borrow it or go to the range with them and shoot it... pretty much anyone will let you put rounds down range with their gun if you offer to buy the ammo

as much as i hate to say it because the guns are fucking beautiful... shy away from the kimber... their quality has really gone down the shitter lately... i know a few people who have had them and had a wide range of problems with them, and its no different when you go on any of the gun forums... in the past few years something at kimber has definitely changed for the worse

at very least go out to a few local gun shops and handle as many guns as you can... its not as good as actually firing them... but you at least get a bit of an idea... handle guns you dont even want or like... you might find that what really works for you is something like a Ruger P90 or a Sig p220... oooh speaking of Sig they have a whole line of 1911s that are amazing

if i remember correctly you use to work with B right??? still in the area??? if so check out Hoffmans (obviously), Newington Gun Exchange (in plaza on rt175 before you head up the hill), and Riverview (on rt5 in east windsor), and just for shits and giggles check out Cabela's (sometimes they have specials on stuff)
if you want, shoot me an IM, im always looking for an excuse to go look at guns :)

I'm acutally going to Hoffmans today to check out whole variety of guns, with my buddy who is a Hartford Cop, he knows alot about guns.

i like the 1911 style. I'm not to keene on the short compact 3" barrells style guns. The Sigs are nice i have seen allot of them on gunsamerica.com.

I'm most likely going to get something used or spend no more then 800 total with ammo, holster, and mags.

I found tons of guns on gunsamerica.com that i like but I wanna see what Hoffmans has to offer.

THanks for teh Info man

store bought holsters suck balls... if anything get an average sized cheap nylon one that you can use as a spare and get a good one from a custom holster maker, they fit better, they're more comfortable, they conceal better, they are easier on the finish of the gun, etc....

depending on what you get and how you decide to carry it, i can help you out with selecting a holster that you wont hate
-- nylon tends to be really cheap all around... the quality is kinda shitty, the fit is kinda shitty, they arent easy or fast to draw from and reholstering with them sucks balls... nylon does retain some moisture, so corrosion is more of a risk if you dont keep your gun cleaned and well oiled, it will also collect grime that can cause scratches and harm the finish over time
-- leather is more expensive but a well made leather holster will be much more comfortable, much higher quality all around as well as quicker to draw from, depending on the holster some are easier to reholster with than others... leather also absorbs and retains moisture (more than nylon) meaning again, that you will need to keep up on cleaning the gun and keeping it oiled to cut down on corrosion... the leather will also collect grime that over time will scratch and harm the finish
-- kydex (hard plastic) is a love it or hate it material, personally i love kydex... kydex holsters run around the same price range as leather ones... if you get a good one they are very thin, very light, and very comfortable, they are the fastest to draw and reholster with, they dont retain moisture so they do not add to corrosion, some people say it is harder on the finish of the gun but i havent personally noticed it at all... i wipe the inside of mine out every week or so to keep any grime and crap out of there (cant really wipe the grime out of nylon or leather)

also some people care about the look of their holster (why people care about the look of something that has to be hidden any time you are in public i will never understand... buy hey).... anyway, nylon and kydex holsters are not pretty.... at all (well... kydex has a functional beauty about it... but that doesnt really count).... leather is definitely the way to go if you want a nice looking holster

heres a few holster companies to take a look at:
Comp-Tac : Products <-- i have the CTAC... its the shit :)
K&D Holsters | Custom Gun Leather and Shooting Accessories <-- these guys make some beautiful leather ones

HOLSTERS <-- heres a list to a shit ton of different holster makers

if you have any questions about anything feel free to ask

i'ma pipe up and say i've thoroughly enjoyed shooting the baby eagle .45 - it was heavy but really well balanced, and the weight helped with recoil and thereby improved my rapid fire accuracy (didn't have to reset my aim as much). i'm picking up the compact baby eagle .9mm one of these days (it is reviewed to handle the same or better). but hell, i'm a girl :shrug2:

id say go with the springfield xd I have numerous pistols and it by far my favorite.

I like my SW sigma series 40ve. The M&P40 is more powerful, the M1911 is a good gun, but I've never fired one.

E's advice is spot on. Your best bet is to go down to the range and spend some time shooting a few different firearms. I love my 1911 but carry a Glock every day. The 1911 is a family airloom, the slide is a Remmington Rand from WW II and the frame is a Colt circa WW I (complete with Property of the United States) So I really dont want to carry it in cause I have to use it and I never see it again.

As far as holsters I have a Galco in the waistband for the Glock as well as a Kydex. I like them both alot. I use the Kydex while I am out hunting and playing in the woods, the Galco (leather) holster is for my daily carry.

You will soon discover once you buy your first gun, regardless of what it is you are going to end up buying another. And then another, so on and so forth.

I personally really like SIGs. I have a P220 and also have a P239 9mm that I use for concealed carry. I've tried glocks and springfields, and for some reason I just don't like how they feel in my hands.

Yeah, that's a big toss up to any gun. It has to fit comfortably in your hand. Which is why it's a good idea to test fit them before buying. My next two guns are going to be a Mossberg 500 and an as yet to be determined .38 to keep loaded. Another draw back to Glocks is that you can't leave the magazines fully loaded for extended periods of time or the springs wear out. They may have addressed that issue since I got mine, though. It was either Chuck Taylor or Massad Ayoob who said that he just leaves two rounds out of his magazine and that solved the problem for him.

+1 for the Mossberg 500, very nice gun.
