Hey, I am 17 and am bout to start my first build, swap(first post to). I have a b18b1 block already tapped for lsvtec with crank and oil line. Got a deal only cost me $80. anyway i am probably going to go with a b16 head with aftermarket internal. I Am tight on money so i buy piece be peice when i can. Im just looking for any advice you know what type of pistons and rods(i was thinking type R w/eagle rods) then shunk2 parts on the head. any advice on parts or things to look out for helps. thanks

Skunk2 cams are fine, but I'd avoid their valvetrain pieces (springs, retainers, etc.). There's been some incidents of their valvetrain parts failing in the past...

yeah I've read up alot. i want to run at least 11 to 1. i figured itr pistons with a b16 head should be at least that probably more. I just wanted to check. also should i go ahead and put after market valves and springs, etc. i know to put new cams and gears at least. i don't really have that much money saved i am check to check so i save what i can then when i find a deal on something i need i pull money together to get it. but once i graduate in a month ill be working and have steady money. sorry if the questions seem stupid but i don't really have to many people to teach me this stuff im kinda on my own

Thanks that helps. I found a complete b16 head for sale that i will be going to look at as soon as i can get ahold of the guy. he has a b18b block for sale to so i think he might have already been running ls/vtec. Ill let you know how it goes

The thing you need to know about engine building is patience is an absolute key factor.
You may not have the money right away to buy quality parts, and that happens. You just need to save up the money and like you said buy the parts piece by piece.

Building/Re-Building an engine is something you DO NOT want to take corners on. Do lots of research on the simple things like where to use lubricants and what kind, also torque specs. If you fail to torque something down properly because you were in a hurry, you will be sorry.

yeah i know that why i waited till im bout to graduate that way id work more and have more money and time to work on this project. I've some of the other posts up about people taking shorcuts and how that worked out of gettting a car and finding someone tooks shortcuts. this is like the biuld where i get to learn everything so i want to make sure i do it right.

Sounds like you understand that. Good.

The thing is, you can spend thousands of dollars on high quality parts, but they will only perform as well as you installed them.

Its also a good idea to get an engine that isn't being used and just take it apart and re assemble it a couple times. Something that has a cracked block or is never going to be used again.

Another tip, bag everything and label very specifically when you are disassembling/re-assembling. It makes all the difference when you are putting things back together.

Meh, don't necessarily count on having more time if you're done with school and entering into the full-time work force. I thought the same thing but I think I actually have less free time now then when I was a student.

Good luck with the engine build by the way! :D

Thanks Ill definetly keep that in mind. and one of my friend knows a guy who knows just bout everything about hondas and hes going to help me do the work. But i am going to look into a non running engine to re assemble thats a good idea.

Yeah you might be right about still not having time but im taking the summer off so hopefully ill get most of it done.
