i am in the process of building a h22a4 short block.
i am looking to rebuild with factory usdm parts.
stock rods and pistons. will use coated main and rod bearings.
also will use apr custom rod bolts.
it motor will live in high rpms(i like to rev) oil pump will be changed for a higher flowing unit.
my question is will i start spinnig bearing or breaking rods?
what is a safe rpm for a stock unmodified bottom end and any ideas on my set up?

if you have upgraded your head components, im quite sure the bottom end can take it...ive bounced the rev limiter a few times on my stock engine. Going past the readline is a problem because the valve springs get over worked and look at that...the piston hit the valve. I think youll be alright, but dont quote me on it. Make sure you have oil flow or youll definitely be SOL.
 
werd. I've heard that 8200 rpm is safe on a stock H22 if tuned properly. Any higher than that, and you'll regret it. I don't know where the source was for that number, so pass redline at your own risk.
 
the head is fully reworked . i will be using super tech valve springs + retainers.
or skunk 2. stage 2 alterdcreations port work so the head could take it.
with the mods to the rods and upgraded bearing you dont think it could take it?
unless the h22a rods have a habbit of breaking i think it can unless sombody hase a horror story they could tell me?
i hope i wont be one.
 
h22 rods dont break until the ring lands go (which does happen). That is usually the problem you see, thats why most people tell you to build the bottom end for turbo and nitrous. I dont think you will have a problem with the build up that youve listed.
 
also did you hear anything about probe ultra light rods, and can they take any boost (if any in future, i dont like to buy parts twice)?
 
not really sure, i think calesta suggested them a while back. i usually trust his opinion, so i dont think youll have any problems running them if you find them cheaper than eagle.
 
i hear they are great for n/a built ups but in the future i might go boost.
how many pounds do you think they can take before they give up?
 
like anything, it would depend on the tune, the size of the turbo if any, static compression, rpm range, etc.
 
i am building the stock bottom end for n/a. If i put probe rods i will use type-s floating pistons with stock bore. I think with the coated bearings i can spin if freely with out to much fricton loss i would run 12.1 compression. if turbo comes along i wound run a t-4 turbine houseing and a t-3 compressor.
i would keep the 8600 rpm mabe more but run 6 psi max on the street.
if motor holds up made some kind of fluid injection and run more boost.
 
I would read up on boost. High RPMs under boost cause a lot more con rod force. You get power from the higher effective compression. You should plan on running under 8k under boost, and probably less than that. Read "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell. It will change the way you think about turbo power.
 
i love to rev the piss out on my engines. that being said I am building for n/a but if i diciede to boost i would want to rebuild but $$$$(baby on the way). would the rods hold up to 12 psi max(on track)?
 
Probably not. Remember, high boost doesn't mean higher flow. A smaller turbo would need more pressure to put forth the same amount of CFM air. A larger turbo could do the same amount at a lower PSI. A smaller turbo spools faster, but falls flat quickly. A large turbo can make monster power, but be useless at low rpms or even midrange. Smaller turbos also make much more heat, a big problem especially concerning predetonation.

Your goal is probably gonna be like the rest of us. A middle size turbo(T3/T4 hybrid), a good intercooler, and be properly tuned around 7 psi. You really have to learn to understand the compressor maps, turbo systems, or know someone who does.

I care but i dont want to use a t3 turbine housing because of the rpm i plan on running. i do not want to much back pressure thats why i would go with a t4.
interms of compressor maps i would use maybe a t3-60 or a t04e-46
i said before that i love to rev so i would build a system around my driving style.
 
Wilder build=More money for less payoff.

Read up on the Pissedoffsol that pretty much started this site. Brian eventually sold off 20k in shit, and barely drove the car.

There was a cool turbo in that book I mentioned. It had a variable impeller. The impeller blades would spin outward and catch more air as rpms raised up. This aided spooling at low rpms, and yet retained high power output at higher rpms. Like a ballerina pulling her arms in to spin faster, but in reverse.

Awesome idea. I've never seen one for sale, or know what they cost, but it sounds like the best of both worlds. "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell. Rent it, borrow it, buy it on Amazon or from me. It's a good read.
