Thumbs down advanced timing vs. factory timing

i have a 93 civic with a b20...car has advanced timing...but it runs like shit on low rpms and the tach keeps shooting all over the place...how much does advanced timing help the power??? is it worth it or should i just put the timing to factory specs???
