Default EG8 Vtec head onto non Vtec

Before anyone says anything about searching, i'm really just trying to get some straight answers to my specific questions regarding swapping a vtec in my car. now with that settled...

I have a 92 Civic Lx with the D15B7
I just rebuilt the whole long block
It's got a header on it, high flow cat, and full catback
It is already hydro 5sp

I really wanted to do a GSR swap, and i had the motor at one point, but it was going to cost too much to put back together.

so what i've decided is to swap to Vtec, either just swapping the head or the whole block.

What i need is input as to whether i should just put a vtec head on there, and which one, or if i should swap motors completely to a vtec, like a z6 or something.

Thanks for the help guys.

also, i really need some how to info on swapping to a vtec, like the wiring and what i need to make sure i have. refer me to threads or w/e, i just can't find anything useful.

I've also bought an Si tranny. it was worth it, right? 100 bucks? too much?

Keep your block and strap a Z6 or Y8 head on it, Its called a "Mini-me" swap.

Youll need:
z6 or y8 complete head
z6 or y8 head gasket
z6 or y8 intake manifold
z6 or y8 water pump
z6 or y8 timing belt
P28 ECU
Harness's (I would recommend using rywire harness's, they are pricey but worth it)

And yes the Si tranny was worth it!!!

REP IS WELCOMED

Alright, that helps a lot dude. What do I need to make sure i have the complete head? I need the vtec solenoid, but what else? and will rywire have everything i need to switch the wiring over to my non vtec harness? or is that just a replacement engine harness? thanks

I started looking at some Y8 heads on ebay, and i never realized that the Y8 was only OBD II. How is that going to effect the swap? putting an obd2 head on my obd1 would be more work than an obd 1 z6, right? i guess i'll just stick with a z6. Please give me input.

alright, i just bought a z6 head with the valve cover and vtec solenoid for 150. Head's in good shape too. I'll still get it reconditioned, but i'm happy with it. I think it'll be fine for a new cam and maybe small turbo for many years to come. as soon as i put it on the motor it'll just be NA for a while (I just bought a sweet header, i don't wanna throw it away already).

Do you think the Z6 head, a skunk2 manifold, fuel rail, 550cc injectors, fuel pressure regulator, and 255lbh fuel pump would be quick and adequete? let me know. I've got an AIRMASS header and full 2.5 inch exhaust on there.

also, i'm worried i'm not going to be able to upgrade this block. are there places that actually sell aftermarket pistons for the B7? I'd like to bore it out to 76.5 and put higher comp pistons in with performance rings.

HA! I think you just bought my head! The head is in great shape and the only reason I was selling it is because I'm doing an ls/vtec and I'm parting out the engine. It'll be cleaned up and shipped out in the morning.

The 550cc injectors would be adequate for anything you want to throw at that motor. I've got 460cc injectors from an rx-7 on my car and they ran great with my turbo. Oh and by the way the plugs in the head are brand new a few weeks ago and they are one step colder and gapped to 0.035".

that's awesome. Let me know if you have anything else that you think would be of use to me that you are trying to get rid of. talk about a small world.

Do you think I could slap it on without reconditioning it? You know the condition it's in better than me.

and also, i guess i don't understand the whole hot plug cold plug deal. What does it mean that they're a step colder?

I'm not exactly sure about the whole cold plug hot plug thing either but that's what I was told to do for my turbo setup. I have a turbo setup that I was using on that motor. The head is in fine shape and doesn't need a rebuilt, I'd just slap it on and got for the gold. The motor had higher mileage but was in very good condition. The cylinders still have the honing marks in them from the factory.
