Default need help with vtec on my new ZC engine

I just put the ZC engine in my 92 civic lx. I had to use my old engine wiring harness because the harness they gave me was reverse because it was from Japan. I got the engine working fine except for the vtec. How do you wire the vtec? I got the OBD1 wiring chart to find out where to put the wires in the computer. The guy I got the engine from said he gave me the right ecu. I put one wire in the computer for the vtec pressure switch and one wire in the computer for the vtec solinoid. I only had one ground wire. I did all that and the vtec doesn't work. I can't stand having a new engine that's not running at its full potential. Please help. I am hoping I don't have to buy a whole new harness because then I'll probably have to take the engine back out to put the new harness on. The guy I got the engine from said all I had to do was put two wires to the ecu and 2 wires to ground. Other than that he didn't know anything else. I'll pay $50 cash to anyone that gives me the solution that works. I need the vtec to work.

I am pretty dang sure my engine is both a vtec and a ZC because ZC is written on the block and vtec is written on the valve cover. Also, written on the computer that the JDM company gave me says sohc. Is it possible that my engine is some special thing only made in Japan?

all zc engines are JDM and no they are not vtec maby a mini me thats why the block says vtec and your ecu should not say any thing like zc or any thing it should be a code like a PR4 P30 P28 P06 all diffrent kinds of codes but no zc for a ecu code post up some pics and we can help you out

Not possible.

---

There IS an OBD1 VTEC ZC. Yes, all ZCs are JDM, but there is a ZC that is basically the same as the D16Z6. It's SOHC VTEC, and it does have a legitimate ZC stamp on the block.

A VTEC valve cover won't fit on a non-VTEC SOHC block. The spark plugs are on the wrong side of the engine.

It is possible that the engine is a mini-me, but you're not typically going to find a mini-me conversion engine from an engine distributor.

To the original poster, you might want to check out some of the VTEC wiring threads in the reference section.

Don't think he got this from an engine supplier.

Beat me to it!
I just started working with a DOHC ZC the other day. Did you say its SOHC? I beleive they do come Vtec as Calesta said. Do you know how to read the time stamps on the block? If so let me know what year its from. Im comparing stats on all different ZC's. Whats stamped on the block? My DOHC is just 'ZC' Nothing more. When you say you had to use the old harness.. Do you mean the one that attaches to all the sensors ect ect? I just got my head and the hole wire harness off the DOHC and im about to go look up what ODB it is and find some diagrams. I will look for or try to build you a small map on how to wire it into your civic's harness if I find the information.

True for 88-95, but 96-00 d16y7's are non vtec but have the same valve cover as the y8's and the z6's. The only difference is the y8's don't have vtec stamped on the valve covers like z6's do.

Yeah, my car is a SOHC. I don't know how to read the time stamps on the block. The block says ZC with some other numbers under it. I used my harness from my old stock engine for the sensors. This wiring harness had everything except the vtec plugins because my old engine wasn't vtec. I got a wiring harness with my ZC engine except it was reverse so I took off the plugs that go to the vtec pressure switch and the vtec solinoid. I plugged them in the ecu like an OBD1 wiring chart said, but that didn't work. If you could get me a small wiring map that might help me that would be great.

Good catch.

Ic3, all ZCs will only have "ZC" stamped on the block. Anything else is NOT a true ZC.

Everyone has to learn somewhere- we can't go around banning everyone just because they don't know everything- but you're right, this kind of information dispersal is dangerous.
