I have a customer that wants to turbo his D16 01 Civic, I am trying to talk him into a LS swap / turbo or a K Series Swap / Turbo.... He has deep pockets so I am not worried about that... I assume the LS swap would be easier and he would be able to spend more money building the motor and on good turbo parts.... Let me know what yall think!

You either made a typo or you're confused. If the car truly is an 01 Civic then it doesn't have a D16 and you won't be able to easily swap an LS into it. Your only real swap choice for the 01+ Civics is the K-series...

+1 on what brutal said. if its 01 and up, k swap is the only reasonable way. if it is, in fact a 2000 or older, it pretty much depends on budget and goals. what type of power do you want? what type of price range are you talkin about? how reliable does it need to be? theres lots more factors than simply what setup........

Ah, all of this is based on the customers needs. I don't deal much in honda performace so I really don't know where to begin.. And don't think I have ever built anything with the amount of power he will be making reliably heh. Can these motors even hold boost without being rebuilt bottem up? The last thing I built for myself was a 98 VW VR6 Turbo. pumping 350 at the wheels @ 15 PSI on stock internals.... I am not a amature when it comes to installing and tuning turbos... But I have never had a request for a motor swap in a civic :/ The guy said it was a 01 civic, 1.6l non vtec ... Led me to believe it was a B16 or a D16....correct?
So you all would be the people to ask... Im clueless on the subject... but money is money and it has to be done correctly and efficiently |

It's a D17 actually, so it's a 1.7 liter D-series engine. You can turbo on that, there are some kits out there for it, although not as many as for the older Civics and Integras. The B-series swap is pretty much out of the question. No one makes mounts for it into that chassis so it would all have to be 100% custom.

haha, if you have to ask what would entail a K20 swap, i highly suggest that your first one is not on someone elses car.

motor, trans, axels, mounts, wiring harness, ecu, intake and exhaust manifolds (1 each remember!), custom exhaust, custom wiring. those are general...
if your a shop seeking advice on a forum, ..um, glad i'm not taking my car to you (no offense) but what's the budget your workin with? double check the year of the car too. that'll make a big difference in pricing. for 2000 or earlier it's about 10,000 for a k series swap. B series can be had for 2~4 Last edited by YBLEGAL; 04-10-2008 at 08:20 PM. |

Ah, I have done plenty of motor swaps... A few SR20DET's did 2 LS1 RX7 swaps... most of them have been track cars and not street legal.... Don't know much about honda swaps as I have no interest in hondas what so ever besides the prelude in my driveway my wife wanted.... We are not a "Honda Performance Shop" and do not claim to be.... Just had a special request for this and I wanted to see what was out there.... nothing more
Thanks for all of your help! I am by no means trying to be some big nut swinging honda guru like some of you ![]() |

riiiiiiight. throwin an sr20 into a chassis that comes with said motor STOCK is not quite on par with a k swap. chances are you wont be able to handle it. especially taking into account the fact that you dont even know what motor is in the thing to begin with!(pop the hood......) and someone with "absolutely no interest in hondas" doesnt seem like a good or FAIR canidate to be performing such a swap as this, let alone one with a custom boost setup. probably in the best interest of your "buisiness" to send said work elsewhere

who said any of the installs were "STOCK"... I have done a MK3 VR6 motor swap into a MK1 chassis... dropped the motor 3 inches below reg install height...In my personal experience anything to do with a VR6 is pretty much more complicated then any motor honda will ever build .... at least they make standalone FMS for honda's unlike the traditional megasquirt installs used some of my other applications. Im not here to get in a pissing contest with anyone... wanted to ask around and see what others in the "honda" community thought about the swap...
btw. The car has a B series swap in it now, done by some hack job company in Indy. It is a nightmare from the looks of it and I will honestly turn down the job just because another shop did a sloppy swap into the car as of now |

swap out the old engine/trans and put the new one in (if your putting in a b-series). K-series is far too complicated for you even though you have experience with vr6 swaps. If you cannot complete a b-series swap and correct its wiring problems yourself, don't attempt to do a K-swap. __________________

It is a 01. I will try to get some pictures on Monday, nothing is set in stone guys and the kid does not know what he wants to do, I guess he is working with daddys money. I doubt I will touch it if the swap that is in it is a hack job.

That's really weird. I have never, ever, seen a B-series swap into the 01+ body style. I'm guessing that it probably is some kind of half-assed hack job, since nobody makes mounts for that kind of thing. Also, unless they used an engine from an 01 Integra, it's illegal as hell...

lol yeah really weird.
hey if he's made of money, it's not that big of a deal if you have to buy new engine harnesses for a K. fixing what's hacked together is just spending money to replace shit, unless you've got cuts and welds... idk, i'd shoot for the money. it's gonna take many hours of labor to do. and if you dont make the money, if he's got deep pockets, he'll find someone who will. since your an 01 civic, you can do a k series swap relatively easy (if he didnt cut and weld) |
