My mother was just at a conference in Trenton. She's a teacher. Well after the whole thing, the teachers are just trading war stories. One guy says that he constantly has parents approach him at conferences that only speak Spanish. Then get pissed at him because he doesn't speak it.

He is not working in a wholly Spanish community. A small demographic of the students are Hispanic. He works in NJ. If this were NM or AZ, maybe, but NJ is a long way from any Spanish speaking country.

One thing I give Philadelphia credit for... Nearly all the cheese steak places only accept orders in English. Literally will send you away if you try it in any language but.

I'm not anti-Spanish, but don't expect people to speak your language. When I go to a bodega I don't expect English. When I go to the Asian Market, I don't expect English. I don't even expect it in certain delis. And I will stutter and stammer trying to get my point across in a language I don't know. But I'll never get mad at someone for not knowing my language.

I don't think we should be required to speak Spanish, but I don't have a problem if you speak it with the other people you know who are spanish/mexican etc. That's fine with me. If I was in Germany, and I met someone who spoke English as a first language, I would certainly talk in English, but I'd speak in German if it were expected, or I'd point.

if you live here, you need to learn english. we should not teach our kids spanish in school just because spanish people live here. im not racist or anything, but it really does piss me off when people live in our country and they cant even speak our language... and they expect me to know their language, fuck that!

Its not just spanish, a lot of Polish, Asian and other groups don't know english either. It pisses me off that they came to our country and refuse to learn the language of the land. I really do not mind some of the people who have broken english, atleast they are trying to make an effort. If I moved to another country I would want to learn the local language just to be able to be a productive member of society.

I want to learn the languages of a few countries I just plan to visit. My Spanish is pretty decent, I want to learn Portuguese, Slovakian, and maybe even Japanese. Japanese would be tough though.
