Default Got a ticket today

Yep, for rolling a stop sign. I was out in Airway Heights (basically a town along the highway that is near Fairchild AFB). I was leaving the Yokes parking lot (working) and there is a stop sign in the parking lot. Cop was sitting across the street. I rolled slowly towards the stop sign, and I really thought I stopped my car completely. Either way, there was no traffic in sight, and I turned right onto a road that leads out of the parking lot. I stopped at that stop sign, checked for traffic, and turned onto the highway.

He got behind me, and immediately turned on the lights. So I pulled over.

Here's the dialogue:
Officer - "Good morning, can I have your license and registration, please."

Me - "Can I ask what the reason for pulling me over was, sir?"

Officer - "You failed to come to a complete stop."

Me - "Alright, I was pretty sure I did, but here's my stuff."

He heads back to his car, writes me the ticket, and comes back.

Him - "Here you go. I want to explain to you in a little further detail why I pulled you over."

Me - "Okay."

Him - "There have been a lot of motorcyclists dying lately and its because of exactly what you did right there. Slow down, take a quick look, and go. Then all of the sudden there's a motorcyclist underneath your car."

Me - "Gotcha, well I have to get back to work. Have a nice day."

As I was driving away, I was thinking to myself "WTF!? It's NOVEMBER. There aren't many bikes on the road at this time of year, especially in Spokane. Also, I was in a fucking parking lot at a wide open intersection where I could see all 3 sides where traffic could approach from. It was completely clear. I came to damn near a complete stop if I didn't come to a complete stop.

Now I have to get it dropped, my job won't allow me to have more than two on my record. FML, time to get an attorney. Cops really are bored around here.

Good for that cop. Not just scribbling tickets to meet quota, but is helping bikers out. Sucks that you got the ticket though.

I lived in one of the four plexes behind Yokes for a year and a half. I worked at Spokane Rock Products down the road for almost 2 years as well. The cops out in airway get tasked quit a bit. Doing emphasis patrols and such.

I understand what you're trying to say but at the same time it sounds like you're saying the bikers aren't at fault as well.

If you take a quick glance and there's no one there, bike or car, you proceed to move, and a bike runs into you, that bike/rider was speeding and that's not the car drivers fault. I'm not saying this is always the case but there are dumb ass riders out there too who don't pay attention either...

I'm not saying the ticket was bullshit, it's kind of a "you had to be there" instance. I was so damn close to stopped that I seriously thought I was.

I don't get how that's helping bikers out, but alright.

I know the four plexes youre talking about, theyre right out the back door of Yokes?

But yeah I got a ticket for going 4mph over the speed limit in my Accord out there. A guy pulling a boat with his truck was passing me

True, and I also think that his reasoning was a little flawed in this case. I mean I was leaving a parking lot. I was not turning onto a main road, or even a side road for that matter. I was turning into another region of the parking lot. Everything was visible.

Thats BS i know what part your talking about. Its that little 'road' that runs in front of Yokes, the car wash and that salon or whatever right?

Is it a private lot? If cops won't even come to an accident in a parking lot.... they shouldn't be allowed to ticket either.

You cannot have a traffic violation on undedicated right of way (i.e. parking lot) because it is private property. You can drive your car a thousand miles an hour drunk as fuck on private property. If it was truly a parking lot, not dedicated public right of way, you don't even need a lawyer to get that one thrown out.

I'm glad there's at least one cop in the world looking out for motorcycles, but that was fucked up.

Just because there isn't a sign saying "PRIVATE PROPERTY" doesn't mean it's not. It doesn't have to be marked. I hope you fight this and win. Then again, he might be able to say whatever he wants when it gets to traffic court. I hope you weren't driving the civic, because now that car is going to be a target.

You might want to look into that if that's the case. State traffic laws do not apply on private property. If you never left the parking lot (from one to the other) you were never on public roads.

Do you have to stop at private parking lot stop signs?
^^ this. I've fought it before and won. That's BS that another cop on this planet is crazy enough to even try ticketing someone for something on private property.

It seems like he just took the opportunity to remind you about watching out for riders while giving you a BS ticket. Look on the ticket for what street he wrote down for the location of the infraction. Either you'll have your proof that it wasn't on a public street or that the officer falsified his written statement. Hopefully its the former because you'll have to prove the latter.

If you look at Drake's drawing, it was the corner of 14th and King. I was turning right on to King from 14th. I had parked my car along the back row of parking at Yoke's, which is accross 14th on the other portion of the parking lot. As you can see the area is wide open, and if I had been going any slower I would have been stopped.

I guess in this case the cop does have a reason to ticket me, but honestly, a warning would have sufficed. I wasn't even aware those were marked streets until I went back out there and checked it out. That map makes it look a lot more clear than it actually is because the roads are the same color and surface as the parking lot and the lines are almost non existant.

awptickes - Yes, I was driving the Civic, and yes I know it is targeted. I didn't have a choice as the Accord was acting up yesterday, it needs a new battery.

I can vouch for that. That parking lot is horribly marked.

Yeah. I understand his reasoning but it was a bit on the picky side. Oh well, I'll deal with it and life goes on.

california rolls........ (not the sushi)

anyway, im not sure about the laws in washington, but in california there are multiple ways to fight it. id check out ticket assassin, but it does take a bit of research and luck.

in ca, you can fight the trial via mail and if you lose, you can retrial in person. also, in both instances the citing officier MUST BE PRESENT. so if he doesn't write a letter or does not show up at court, you win by default.

good luck and may the force be with you.

im surprised more motorcyclists dont die out here in orlando, anytime i get on interstate 4 i get passed by bikes doing well over 100mph. Its not always the drivers fault, sometimes its the nut between the handlebars.
