Ok so here's the deal. Lately I've felt my roll at DOT has become stagnant and I don’t feel like im moving forward with my career. That and there are rumors that DOT are cutting back on contract hours. The position i'll be going to is at the J Edgar Hoover building (aka FBI), the position as it sits at this exact moment isn't the most technical. Basically I’d be transitioning hard copy forms over to a electronic version lots of javascript and then proceeding into ASP.NET (one of the new upcoming technologies on the MS side). So pretty much if i put in dues i get a LOT out of it..

So i've been interviewing a lot and it seems I got an offer today first the pro's.

Pro:
  • 20 more than i make now
  • Upgrade my Secret Clearance to a Top secret with Poly (but i have to do bs work for a little while)
  • Much more challenging work
  • Cutting edge MS developers to learn from
  • Same distance i travel now
  • Same benefits
  • Pays for certifications (MS related)
  • Promotes learning new technology
  • Pay for metro travel expenses (200 a month easy)
  • Newest developer has been there 4 years (stability is so clutch right now with weddings and houses in the mix)

Cons:
  • Same distance i drive now.
  • Much more challenging work (sometimes you hit a comfort zone of in-efficiency, if i move to this place i'll be really using my brain and doing what i can to catch up on the .Net stuff including personal time devotion)
  • Taking it for the team and doing BS stuff for a little while
  • Swallowing my pride and realizing im behind and need to hit the books hard and ask a lot of questions to bring myself up to speed
  • Crash course going in. I learn well this way but it's never comfortable
  • A week less vacation, but a more flexable work enviroment
Now ALLLL that being said. And im supersticious when it comes to this shit so i know im about to screw myself.

But i've been interviewing at a ton of other places and one i had today seemed to have a AWESOME work enviroment. Allow you to telecommute almost as much as you want.. maybe work in the office once a week. BUT on the flip side the position doesnt seem to be the most challeging place and less oppertunity to advance in learning new stuff. But i know their a Cold Fusion and PHP shop so i know i'd learn more on that side.

Should i see what this place has to offer.. i figure i'll get 3-5 days until i get a formal offer letter and another 2 to send it back...

sounds to me like the pros totally outweigh the cons. your cons are mostly just worries it sounds like, not real problems with the job. I'd def. take it.

Me personally, I would take it. It is my dream job to work with the FBI. However, I want to be a field agent. Getting my degree in Criminal Justice as we speak
Anyway, it seems to me that the you're worrying about the pro's you posted. Challenges are good in life if you ask me. It shows people what kind of a person you are. I think you will be alot more satisfied with yourself and what you accomplish if you take the job. After the "BS" stuffout of the way you will feel great about yourself and your flexible working environment. Sometimes life is about swallowing your pride and getting the job done the right way, plus hitting the books again will only strengthen you skills. You will be traveling the same sistance, even though you wanted something closer, you're pay is increased quite a bit and you will be working with the top of the line professionals and your clearance level is upgraded to Top Secret, gotta like that.
Sorry if I am rambling. Good luck with your decision.

just to kinda wrap up this topic an overview of the position that i ACCEPTED at the FBI
  • 21k more a year than now (wont disclose what i make but it puts me in an upper tier)
  • secret clearance gets bumped to a top secret with full poly (highest NORMAL clearance obtainable.. it goes much higher for specific reasons though TSC w/ poly usually runs a company about 60-80 grand each and if i ever leave will put me in a position where i can be like i dont know that skill but i have a TSC so train me they will hire starting at the low 80's in most cases around the bmore-dc metro area)
  • All my metro and marc train expenses (turns my drivable commute to 1 min 12 seconds to the marc train station, didn't use it before cause it cost too much)
  • they wont pay for my 99 dollar a month phone and data black berry bill (which i did get see page 1) kinda sucks but not gonna kill me since im saving 3,000 a year in commuting cost's i dont have to use
  • total travel time increases by about 10 mins cause i have to transfer off a train to another or end up just driving (which is stupid i'll transfer)
  • going to be learning some cutting edge shit after a few months on the gig
  • have to be escorted until my building interim clearance comes through (which fucking sucks, pain in the ass)
  • more places to eat around the FBI building lol choices here are shitty as hell
