Ok, well i have one more semester here at college (fall 06). I need to fulfill my requirements by getting an internship. Instead of just doing it next semester along with my full boat of classes, im looking to do it over the summer. So basically, what it comes down to is do i want to stay here in Burlington and take an internship here, or if i should take a travelling internship. Oh, im a business and marketing dual major, and i really would love to do something with sports and/or creative marketing.

Here are some of the in town options i have and here are the traveling ones...

Options for in town internships:
-One is at a local Deli, "Establish & implement marketing strategy for downtown deli. Design ads/flyers & create cost-effective plans for distribution. Plan & coordinate at least one semi-public event.

-This one is with UVM (University of Vermont) and their athletic dept.
Gain understanding of athletic marketing & promotions at the Division I level. Includes sponsorship sales/partnerships, event mgmt, game day production, & community outreach.

-One is with a smallish publishing company.
Work w/ professional sales executives, writers, photographers, journalists & graphic designers. Help w/ ad campaign coordination, media kit distribution, client service, computer work, and research.

there are a few others that are basically the same deal.... but these are the ones that interest me the most... its just that my situation may not allow it...

---Fuse marketing, www.fusemarketing.com , is located here in burlington, they have some general internships but the ones that interest me are...

Fuse is seeking a highly motivated Field Marketing Specialist in our events division to handle the day-to-day staffing of 6, one week long events. Events include 5 Dew Action Sports Tour events and the Summer X Games. The Main role of position is to assist in running a sponsor's 20x40 marketing presence.

Duties will include, but are not limited to, setting up on-site sponsor presence, managing local staff (5), running activities, handing out samples and premiums and interaction with event attendees. The road crew member must be capable of managing multiple projects and timelines, prioritizing their work, and communicating effectively with associates and clients. Employee would be flown to and from the following locations on the approximate dates, rooming plus a daily perdiem will be provided.

Panasonic Open – Louisville, KY - June 18-25
Right Guard Open – Denver, CO - July 9-16
Summer X Games – Los Angeles, CA – July 30 – August 6
Vans Invitational – Portland, OR - August 13-20
Toyota Challenge - San Jose, CA - September 3-10
PlayStation Pro – Orlando, FL - October 8-15

This one is the most appealling to me, when im not in those areas id be back here in burlington, id be able to continue to live in my apartment and not have to find a person to sublet, BUT the last two events are during school time, and for both id be missing a full weeks worth of classes and work. Should i still go for this??? I know id be missing work, but if i talk to teachers early enough i may be able to either get out of it, or have some of teh due dates stretched so i have optimal time to complete it..

The second one was taken down due to the code not being right, but its a 17 stop nationwide tour for Skateboarding and BMX, i cant remember the name of the tour for the life of me, or the full descrip. BUt its being on the road all summer with a road crew of people, travelling to the different events and running their sponsor tent and staff. This is the most difficult one, because id be leaving in May and coming back in Aug, now i have to sign a lease soon... so im not sure if i can find someone to sublet or what... The advantage of doing one in town would be that id get to live up here without finding a subletter or comprimising my school work... but who wants their senior internship at a deli???

Sorry fo teh long post, but im just overloaded with different options and such. The travelling one would be something that id LOVE to do, but im not sure if risking school work and grades is worth it.... unless the teachers understand. Given what i told you at the top, my areas of study and my marketing interests, what would you choose to do??? Lol, some of you might read this and be like "sooo wtf does he want us to do?" I just want to know what youd do in my situation and any advice you have.

Cliffnotes:
I need an internship.
im a business and marketing major
Id love to find something with sports
Taking an in town intern would be easiest
Taking a travel one would mean possibly putting my school work at risk, but i feel would be the best experience.
Not sure what to do.

If you do the Fuse one with the 6 events, hit me up when you're in Portland, I might make the drive up. I would do this one because it's gonna be something that you'll greatly benefit from not only educationally, but it would be an experience you'd remember for the rest of your life. Opportunities like this don't come down the pipe too often.

And bring pics of dem boobies. lol

well this means i still get to keep my apt and not find a subleter, but my teachers might not give me a break... AND its only a week a month for the summer, so 3 weeks to goof off and hang out each month, count me in.

Interview is set for next tuesday, score.

If i get it, i will. I was talkin to my dad and he was the one makin me all nervous and shit, he was like "well what about your school work?" "what about your apartment?" "what are you going to do about a subleter if you need one?" "You would start April 30th, thats immediately after finals, or its on the final day depending on your schedule, are you sure that will work out?" "you sure you want to leave and go to these places for a week w/o knowing anybody?" "better make sure the weeks dont fall onto any particular days you were planning on doing anything."

your old man is trying to make you think everything through and he raises some good points...
but honestly i would say fuck your classes and teachers
i would apply for BOTH the traveling ones...
they sound like great opportunities...
and get some local backup plans to just incase they fall through

i would imagine there will be lots of people trying to get the cool internships

ooh, and are you sub-letting your gf while you're gone?

IMO, travelling sucks. Especially when you aren't getting paid for it.

You're going to have expenses, even if they say most are covered....

I'd try to stay local. But thats me.

thanks mang.

Well, on their website, its Jobs/Internships... and i kinda forgot about the job part lol. So the one i reallly wanted to do wasnt available because it is an actual position, not an internship. Poopy.

Oh well, because they have two other internships that im interested in as well, they wont involve any travel and are only like 10-15 hours a week non paid so ill need to find a part time job, poopy, but id have to no matter what other internship i took to be honest.

Well the interview went pretty well, the oldest person there was probably abour 35, everyone else looks to be 20-somethings and they said they like to hire from within (interns, so thats a plus).

The two internships that im looking at are for events and consulting.

Events:
Internships are available for students interested in learning event management skills. Interns will assist in the event production of the action sports events. Specific duties may include coordination of event logistics such as the audio-visual presence, banner placements, premium resale, sponsorship village design, and the pressroom layout. Experience in events and a passion for action and adventure sports a plus.

Consulting:
Internships are available for students interested in learning strategic development skills. Interns will assist in the management of athlete sponsorships, online marketing, retail promotions and other youth marketing efforts. Strong organization and communication skills are required for this internship. The ability to work with groups and an understanding of youth culture is a plus.

Im not sure which one id rather do, they both sound good to me. They are something to get my feets wet and my hands into something. Events is probably the one ill shoot for.

Little background, they work with Right Guards "extreme" line like the TAG bodyspray, they do consulting for Mtn. Dew, work with Burton and a couple of other "action/extreme" sports companies.

Im going to talk to my advisor at school, make sure everything is ok, then ill email her asap. She said that the sooner you email me the better chance you have, because she has about 4-5 other interviews this week.... great.

since this is such a hot topic, and basically my reading skills owned me. I found out that i DO get to go on some week long trips this summer, and the Summer X-Games IS included, im so psyched.

Well i emailed my advisor to have her look at it and give me the go ahead on pursuing it. I just wanted to make sure before I tell the lady to put me on the list that i would get my credits for school. She said, Ofcourse.

So tomarrow I'm going to write up a kinda formal e-mail thanking her for her time and the oppurtunity to come in and apply for the internship. My dad suggested it and it looks good, he's done it to the places he realllly wanted to work for and he got the jobs both times. I hope it works out for me as well.

Bastard... my internship last summer consisted of fabricating an electric actuator test stand, and working on electrical drawings and solid models. And making coffee for the boss . I wish I had your internships. Ah well, I've seen what I worked on on TV. Granted it was on the Discovery channel, but still.
