So I bought these little 'sample' packets of stain and decided to try them out. I hand sanded one panel by hand with 60 grit for about 20 minutes... then rubbed the stain on with some clean shop rags I had... soooo it's not of the best quality.
I picked three kinds; On the Left is Pickled Oak On the Mid. is Natural Wood On the Right is Golden Peacon ![]() I personally like the Pickled Oak, it's a lighter color that will make the house look a little more "open". I'm thinking of doing that for the main floors and the stairs up to the landing, and then a darker color for the upstairs floors at a later time. Here is a picture with lines between the three to help you differentiate between them, with this you can probably tell the lighter lines between the stains in the first picture. ![]() If you can't really tell, it goes from light - dark - darkest in that direction. But yeah other than that I spent an hour taking up all the quarter round on the landing and upstairs in the hallway, so I got a little bit done since Greg never bothers to call me back. ![]() Yeah, it's dirty, and the wood isn't originally stained under the quarter-round, so I'll be buying some new Q.R. since I broke a few pieces by accident. Oh, and PS all the sport bikes are out, it's fuckin 71 outside and gorgeous... makes me fuckin want one right now. |

I am, that's kind of the whole point as to why I'm asking about staining...
I have to sand before I can stain. Anyway, I just need someone to get the floor sander from Menards to my house... and I'm too fuckin tired to stay there until midnight tonight anyway, so probably Friday evening I'll pick it up. __________________

natural wood looks good
the pickled one is way too dull and will look dirty all the time the gold peacon one looks like you rubbed motor oil into the floor __________________

A serious power sander is $35 a day, like I said I simply sanded this down for about 20 minutes by hand so it's not the best of quality in sanding/staining. But it'll give you the idea.

yeah, understood...
when mike did his floors, he literally had someone else STAND on the sander to push it down to get a deep sand going on to rip up all the junk and get to the real wood that isn't damanged or stain leak through it. |

lol you might want to consider something with a better protective value than just stain and i generally like lighter colors on wood any ideas what you'll be doing with the walls in the future? |

at our house up at school, we have wood floors that are 80+ years old. They were showing there age for the past 2 years so we decided to redo them the proper way. We rented a drum sander, and in a few hours, they were down to the natural oak wood, and looked brand new. We then coated them with this epoxy stuff that was like 250 a gallon. The look AMAZING now.

the natural wood has far more luster then the other two choices but the Pecan has a wonderful body to it...

Natural. Oh, and your house looks like the current condition of Turbomirages. Or, as I call it, "Paper Street"

Next summer I think I'll just do some sanding and painting on the walls. But it's all the mortar - wood backplane - studs type of setup. 10-20 years down the road I may rip it all up, reinsulate and drywall it all. |

The stain will fade and you'll be redoing it in a few years. use some sort of sealer/epoxy like asmallsol said. It will last longer and be MUCH easier to clean.
