The Celica.

5-speed FWD>>>Auto tranny AWD

The manual tranny will give you more real control. And in the long run the Celica will be cheaper to maintain.

personally, i woulndn't get either.

i hate autos. i'd rather walk.
if you find that in a 5speed with a 1.8t or 2.8, get it.

the celica looks riced out and is probably beat to piss.

I'd respectfully disagree with this statement, if we're talking about reliability/driveability in the snow. If that's ALL you're looking for, than an auto tranny AWD car will treat you loads better in the snow than a manual tranny 5-speed will. Four wheels driving the car >>> two wheels driving the car

in snow... no matter what the trans

Overall given these two choices, the Celica is a much better choice. Audi's are hella expensive to work on. Any AWD car is... I just gave up on trying to buy a 325 iX. And I know someone that is very happy not to own an '98 Audi A4 anymore, too many things breaking on it. Now he is a happy RSX owner! On another board, someone got rear ended in his Audi, the other car was going about 60 mph and the airbags did not deploy and his front seats fell back. Audi's have electrical problems too. I saw an Audi wagon driving around town yesterday with its backup lights on... so no way would I want to buy an Audi.

The point of a winter beater car is some used reliable car that can handle the snow well and is both cheap to buy and cheap to keep running. I would think that the Celica might have better fuel mileage too, but I don't know. I don't care all that much for Toyotas. Just give me my Hondas.

In all my years in New England, FWD was just fine for getting around town and I've driven in a few snowstorms too. Good snow tires are important. My little sister had an old Suzuki Samurai jeep, but my Civics were still better handling overall. And lastly, if the road conditions are that bad, just stay off the road and wait it out. You don't want the other idiot drivers running into you.

So what price range are you in corvetteguy? I've seen some nice used Subaru wagons up my way.

wtf happened to $100 winter beaters

those cars pictured above aren't "beaters"

well, i guess its all about perspective...

they are compared to a vette i suppose, lol

and i dunno about all the audi problems listed, but i believe they have nice traction control for their AWD autos, so i would say that will out snow bog a FWD car anyday...

Well i ended up getting The 1991 celica gts.....Its a sweet looking car imo and i had one before 1990 before same color 5spd and it was great in the winter... i found out the Audi was all messed up and thats why it was being auctioned off instead of on a lot...I didn't want the Integra mainly cause of the fake badge.....it was nice though...

yeha i guess maybe winter beater wasn't a good description....its looks to be in pretty good shape.....here's the Ebay Item #4504044025 if you guys wanna check it out

That Audi sedan is also a heavy pig.

Anyway corvetteguy, good luck with your "new" Toyota!
